First ED: Rated ///M (SO F80)

I was a naive student out of college when I bought my first 2007 Lexus IS250. Everyone said I should buy a BMW but I didn't listen. And then I drove one...

I had purchased a 2009 BMW M3 Sedan and ever since then, I've only grown more appreciation for BMWs. Along the way, I had owned a 335i, 335is, 95 E36 M3, 97 E36 M3 and a 2011 E92 M3. I started tracking the E36 this year and grown even more appreciative of BMWs. So when all the reviewers are hyped up about the new F80, I knew I had to give it a try.

I had ordered my F80 in July along with another friend of mine who also ordered his F80 but we had to wait until end of September for the pickup. The wait was excruciating. Having never done European Delivery before (nor even been to Europe!), I was super excited about the trip. Excited about my itinerary, my brother and another friend decided to join us on the trip as well.

I figured I had bored you guys enough already with the backstory so let's skip to THE CAR!!! The morning of delivery, I didn't know what to expect. I was overly anxious and at the same time I was super nervous and worried about driving it through the streets of Europe. After listening to some lecture about speed limits in different countries (I have ADD so I wasn't really listening anyway), I went to grab some food about 30 mins before the delivery schedule. That's when I walked out to the balcony and saw my "Millie" waiting for me right at the bottom of stairway to heaven.

At this point, I could eat no longer; I had to go downstairs ASAP! On the dot at 10:30am, I went to my station where Sven was waiting for me and was asking me questions about how my trip was so far and how I got into BMWs etc etc. After a couple of minutes of him watching me suffer, he finally decided to take me downstairs to my car.

During the ordering process, I had changed the colors on the car a dozen time. My sales advisor was definitely not pleased. But when I saw the Sakhir Orange in person and up close, I knew I had made the right decision.

After a couple more minutes of tutorials, Sven said I could go ahead and start up the car and drive it around for a parade lap! I swear I couldn't contain my excitement that I almost had to go change my pants. I had driven a couple DCT F80s but never a 6MT up until that moment. My E92 was a DCT and while it was really fast and the downshifts sound amazing, I got bored of it pretty quickly. I had to go back to the 6MT blindly and I was not disappointed.

Even though we had ordered the cars on the same day, my friend's F80 wasn't scheduled for delivery until the next day. He stayed behind in Munich while the rest of us headed over to Salzburg. As we got on the autobahn, thoughts of breaking in the car was left behind in Munich. Before I know it, I was hitting 120mph (on the unlimited part of the autobahn of course). We decided to detour through Berchtesgaden for a little mountain scenery before sunset.

Only 27km on the odometer….

Upon arriving in Salzburg, the car was met with unwavering eye contacts from everyone including a car that wanted to race at the light in front of one of the busiest pedestrian crossing. I helped encouraged the guy by putting the exhaust on sports mode. A little tip: when an underground garage says 'frei' but it doesn't correlate to "free parking".

My buddy and his F80 quickly joined us the next day and we met up across from Mirabell Palace at the St. Andrew Church. While there, we decided to take a couple of pics of the cars as this was the first time they had met each other. As we were about to move out, there were two kids (about the age of 7-9) that ran away from their mother to come up right behind our cars and started pointing and yelling 'look!!! das M class!!!' to their mother. That made my day.

Ketchup, meet Mustard...

Sidebar: We visited the Sound of Music gardens before hiking to the top of the fortress. We completed the hike from the gardens in about 3 hrs and then hiked back down to Mozartplatz and enjoyed some really awesome food. Out of no where, the flash mob started raising their Stiegl beer and started singing some German song! Salzburg was amazing and is on top of my recommendation for anyone doing Euro Delivery or just visiting Europe!

Off to Nothern Italy!!! We decided to drive through the Grossglockner. This was the first ever mountain pass for all of us and we didn't know what to expect. In short, it was amazing!! Blue Ridge mountains.... ain't got nothing on the Alps! We stopped every couple of minutes to take photographs. The view was spectacular and there was little to no traffic on the pass. The only other people there were from Audi and VW doing brake tests.

The next day, we hit up Venice; the cars stayed parked so not much to show and tell except tunnels!! Also daylight shots of my car since my buddy taking the photos was in my car the day before and there were no rolling shots of my car.

One of us is a typical BMW driver....

Sidebar: If you are ever in Venice, try out this pasta shop (Dal Moro's - Fresh Pasta To Go). The most amazing pasta we'd ever had.

Long lines for it in an narrow alley

Even in Europe, Prius drivers are the worst!

Later that evening, we drove to Bellagio in Como. My goodness what a beautiful drive!!! I highly recommend driving closer to sunset. The drive along the edge of the mountain with water on your right and cars squeezing by in a what seems like a 1.5 lane road used for both directions. At least at early evening time, you can still enjoy the view while being able to spot an oncoming headlight from a blind turn.

GoPro mic for the exhaust!

Bellagio!

Can anyone guess which movie this scene is from?

Getting to Bellagio and leaving Bellagio, the drive can be pleasant or painful depending on the traffic on the road. As we were leaving the next day, somebody decided to come in a RV and it was very interesting watching the RV and small container truck try to inch by each other for another 10 mins. However, everyone in Bellagio thought we were with BMW as we drove around with our GoPros mounted to the outside of the car.

Ready for some more road pics?

As we got into Switzerland, we noticed how everyone drives the speed limit in their very fancy cars. I swear every 5 mins we see a Ferrari or a Lamborghini! We hit traffic at this one tunnel so we decided to detour; it was the St. Gottard's pass! OMG the drive was much faster than at Grossglockner and the view was just amazing. We kept on driving until we hit Furka pass and decided to head towards Lucerne from there via Grimselpass. Best Driving Day EVER.... well up to that point.

Va...

Insertion! Rated M for mature audience only!

Furka!

I should have coded out the corner LED

After eating some delicious chicken at Unicum in Lucerne (a little advertisement) we headed on towards Zurich. That's when we saw the flashes as we drive onto an entrance ramp. I swear we were only going like 85km/h but the limit was 80! Dang Swissies!

As we headed back up to Germany, we decided to detour through France and Luxembourg so a bunch more pics below!

Guess who we ran into?

So what did we do? Started going faster... (in a safe zone of course)

And faster...

Until we maxed out

France was a bit boring so I'll spare some of the kilobytes transfers.

Luxembourg

Is it appropriate to drive up to a sidewalk to take pics of two German cars in front of the First Great War (WW1) Memorial? (At Gelle Fra)

Alright! Let's head to the 'ring! We stayed at the hotel that we can easily identify in Gran Turismo. That place was awesome but the food was even better! I can't believe the number of 1 series Ms I saw at there! We also ran into a Yas Marina Blue F80 and F82 there!

GET THIS, THE BEST PART OF THE TRIP: We met up with another ED fellow who was on his 9th ED for his M235i. He took us around in his M235i as he told us the names of all the turns and the history of the turns. He knew the ring inside out. He then sat in my car and coached me! Lastly, we did a lead follow and it was so much fun. When we asked what he did for a living, he graciously told us he designed 8 out of the 11 turns at Laguna Seca... enough said. I need to sync up with him for the next ED trip!

The drive on the ring made it impossible to get any good shots with the camera so I only have a couple below:

Early bird gets... parking spot!

The Nurburgring experience is incomplete without this photo!

And finally!

After a full track day, we headed back to Munich. We ended the night after eating at Augustiner Brau and driving around Munich blasting country music about getting drunk on a plane. But that did not happen; the short version is don't fly United...ever... unless you like to be sober and miserable. #FlyLufthansa #NoCodeShare

As for the review of the car on the track, it was definitely much more connected than my E92 was on the track. It felt closer to the E36 rawness but not quite there. The car is very predictable and easy to control but I was a bit scared of the power down low so I didn't push it very hard. As a beginner, I can definitely tell the differences between the E36, E92 and F80 and F80 is definitely heading in the right direction for BMW. Definitely an ultimate driving machine. I'll do a couple of track days in the states once I get my car again to do another review.

Great pics! The Ring looks so lonely right now. Very cool that you had a coach. That would be quite awesome.

That is a great color and the inside is a great match compared to some others I have seen.

Ok, what is the movie? I want to say one of the MIs or Bonds.

Amazing pictures! I'm so tempted to do an ED, but I think the wait would kill me.

I happened to notice that the Prius was from Heidelberg, did you stop there?

No. The pic was taken in Italy while crossing the bridge to Venice. The wait isn't that bad. 1 month before the pickup and then 2 months to arrive to stateside + PCD. If I wasn't going to do PCD then my car arrived in 4 weeks from drop off and was cleared from customs in about 4-5 days.

Us West Coasters have a longer wait. I've been lucky so far though. I picked up on the 8th of October and dropped off on the 15th. Boat docked at Port Hueneme yesterday. Assuming my customs and vpc turnaround is quick, I should have it just as I'm making the 3rd monthly payment. I haven't found the wait too difficult. I have my 335is to hold me over.

I'm jealous of your Ring pics. We only had two photographers on site the day I went and one of them caught pics while my windshield was fogged up. I really would have liked one along the Karussell, but one clearly showing my face would have been nice too.

Congrats on the car. It sure looks more fun planning the trip with someone else taking delivery. I think it's definitely a plus in a sense that you get shots of each others vehicle in motion (passengers taking photos of course).. Those are some wicked pictures!

Great story. I also ordered M3 SO/SO , MT. I'm curios you said you are not used to MT, so how was your first time driving it? How's the clutch feel? Also how many days did you do all those driving?Any hotel recommendation?

Loved it. But you made constant mention of GoPro cameras and external mikes....so where is that footage? We're dieing for more.

I have to admit that when I first saw that orange car I thought "Yeccch". But out in the daylight and countryside it looks beautiful. Great choice. Just don't let it ever get dirty.
