Unhappy Fading Paint

My 05/545i, Black in color, is starting to fade in three sections... the hood, top, and trunk.
The dealership upon inspection states that its the clear coat, and cost of repainting these three areas is $5000.00

I haven't seen any other BMW's with this problem. The rest of the car is showroom perfect, and the problem just reasonably started at an accelerated pace.

Has anyone else had, or have this problem?

Its a first i heard or seen an E60 with faded paint. There's a first time for everything though. Please do not let the dealer do the job. Im sure you've considered this already but find a good autobody shop and see what they can do for you. Maybe even a specialized detail shop can advise and help you out.
I use to always keep my five'er garaged at home and at work. Now that my office has moved and its an open parking lot i get my car waxed 3 times a year vs 2 to protect the paint. Maintenance washes are done once a week of course.

Post a picture so we can see how bad it is or not.

Do you keep it in a garage? More importantly, do you keep it clean and waxed?
If you do these things and the car was purchased used, maybe the previous owner(s) didn't.
... and after all, the car is 9 years old.

I just got an 05. Paint was fading/ oxidizing on roof in front of sunroof. Detailer tested out a bit if rubbing compound and it looks back to normal. Try that option first.

A good detail shop with a machine buffer can fix that issue, if there is enough clear coat left. Polishing removes microns from the top layer of clearcoat that could be hazed or oxidized. You only need to repaint if the clearcoat has failed as is peeling off of the car.

The E60 black cars sometimes suffer from this problem. Mine looks like a$$ as well. You can try and get a professional detailer to work with a buffer on the clear coat, but yes, you may need to repaint the car. Get quotes for the paint job. I found a reputable shop here in Houston that quoted me $2,200.

Hey thanks everybody, I'll look into the professional detailer option, to see if this can be cleared up with buffing the clear coat. I'll keep you posted.
thanks again

Fading Paint

It looks much better/not perfect; after cleaning, polishing, buffing, and 3 coats of wax. It's obvious that having a "complete detail" twice a year was insufficient. Therefore, Until and after I get this paint job done, I'm going to lend more personal input into the SmoothRider Bimmer.

Thanks,

I'm having the same problem with my clear coat fading, 2008 535i. anyone else have this issue? It sucks the car is not even 10 years old and the paint started to fade Hell my 98 Subaru still have original paint with fading or any paint issues.

Can you guys post pics of what is fading. BMW paint and clear coat from the factory is usually great and resistant to the elements if properly maintained. One thing you guys might want to consider is once you have paint correction done is to get it opti-coated. I've seen some great long term results with this coating on other cars and I've even put it on my Suntek PPF which has now made it maintenance free.

+1 on getting a paint correction and some kind of coating put on. Keep it waxed!

my 2008 E60 has one small area in the lower body skirt where the clear-coat peeled off. thank god the rest of the car is ok, yes the car mostly garaged and washed even in winter time to get rid of salt.

This is not like fade from scratch, it almost looks like a plastic covering the area look.

This seems to be a real problem. I have heard a lot of people complaining about the same issue, incuding the body shop I took my car to. They told me they see it all the time. BMW does not take any ownership of this issue. (I know why $$$) but you would think reputation is worth something.
