My neighbor has been on me to get into HDPE for a while now. He is moving up in the groups and wants me to join [no way in hell I could keep up, but it would be fun]. I am a BMWCCA member here in the National Capital Chapter with Summit Point not too far away.

I have done some digging here and on BMWCCA.org, but cannot find any clear details around what steps are needed to get into HDPE. Can I register, get my car inspected and prepared and jump right in? Or do I need to take a DE course first? Would a PCA event participation carry over to a BMWCCA event as far as my 'check box' progress goes?

Thanks.

I'm sorry, I can't offer any advice about BMWCCA. I jumped right in and have done events through Audi Club of North America, SCCA, TrackDaze, Cadillac, etc, but have never done a BMWCCA event. Mostly I replied to encourage you. You are well positioned with Summit point Main and Shenandoah nearby, and VIR a reasonable drive away (and well worth it).

It may differ for your local chapter, but here's how the Puget Sound (Pacific Northwest) chapter does it:

1. You need to take a driving skills class. They offer their own Car Control Clinic, but they also accept the Porsche (PCA) club's Driver's Skill day (and PCA accepts BMW's CCC).

2. You need to tech up within 1 year of your track day. This means an inspection by an ASE certified tech, costs $35 for some shops that have discounted rates for BMWCCA people. Once again, the PCA tech form can substitute (with certain notes).

Once you have the basic training, and the tech clearance, you can go to an HPDE hosted by the BMW CCA. PCA also accepts BMW CCA members up here in the NW.

Beyond this, I would recommend fresh oil, brake fluid, coolant (if you haven't changed it in a while) before you go. Stock pads will be fine for your first event.
