Thats V5 as in model designation, not engine type. When I first looked at that, I said v5, that thing is going to shake to pieces....

The existing hatches would be too small and too expensive for the US market. They'd be going head to head with a lot of good small cars which are either much cheaper, get better mileage, have more room, or all of the above. The downside far outweighs the low margins. The X1 is an attempt to put the car into a less competitive (more profitable) market segment. That's the same reason for the 1 coupe. Maybe the next generation hatches will be sufficiently improved to fill a niche between the Mini and the 3. I'd be curious to see how Audi is doing with A3 sales. It's trying to find a luxury niche in the small car market segment.

I know it's way early, but we've all known an X1 was coming for a LONG time, but has anyone heard anything about where this might fall price wise? and if BMW is looking to make it fuel efficient? I would love to see this with the 2.0d engine from the EU 1 series, with a reasonable price. My wife has an X3, and I have a 335i, and frankly, we are looking to either leave BMW or find some cheaper, and more fuel efficient cars.
