Cool In business for 5 years!

A special day for me.

5 years ago today, my business partner and I started up an IT security firm, secureFront Technologies, Inc. And after 5 years, the company has been debt-free and solidly profitable for 2 years, and we've both been on payroll since last year. My partner is a full-time employee, and with some luck I will be one soon.

Most importantly though, we're still happily working together. We've had our disagreements and creative differences, but we've always been able to find a happy middle ground... and after 5 years, it's safe to say our friendship has lasted as well.

We never did get the venture capital money we were looking for... and I think that might have been what spared us from the fallout. I suppose I should thank the VCs we courted over the years for telling us our business model wasn't aggressive enough.

Anyway... Happy 5th Birthday secureFront, and thanks Dave... you've made it a good 5 years.

Congrats alee!

I imagine it has taken copious doses of hardwork, creativity and (at least some) compromise to reach this milestone. I'm glad that things have been a success and the prognosis is for more. It sounds like you have had some fun along the way also.

I wonder if it's possible to run the company entirely on Free Kick?

Thankfully, we don't need/want VC money anymore... retaining control is worth far more than getting $2M-$3M (what we wanted before) to build a staff and expand.

We were told various things, from "you're asking too little money" (from a VC that's still in business), to "your business plan doesn't show show 1000% growth over 3 yrs" (from a VC that vanished when the bubble burst).

I think we were too young to be trusted with that amount of money, and neither of us had any business experience... just good ideas. I'm pretty sure we would have spent our VC money on helicopters, cars, and ridiculous parties.

It sucked to watch my friends score 7-8 figure VC money, and sucked even more when their paper worth was 1000x mine. I did miss out on the dot-com fun, but these days, I wake up thankful that the only risks we took were taking out loans and guaranteeing them ourselves. A hard pill to swallow, but we learned a lot more from it.

Congrats on your business Al! Its always great to hear when people you know are doing well.

Here's to many more years of success!

I've been lucky too. Been with the same small company for 6 years (in July) and still love going to work. I don't know how many people can actually say that.

Congrats Alee!

Your partner must be very patient ------ being that you take such extended vacations.

I'll be a consultant for ya if you buy this 'company car' to get around in. Just think, lots of auto-x fun and no need to worry about getting your Bimmer wet or dirty!

Congrats, Al. Looks like hard work and perseverance really can pay off.

And Alex, Al will take that M3, but I'm afraid he's going to want the SMG option. Unless someone can teach him manual before it the M3 6-spd arrives!

Congrats!
As someone who is following a similar path with a new security venture I know all too well about the pains involved with just surviving, let alone success.
Congrats again. It ain't easy.

Congrats Alee! I didn't realize you had been doing it that long.

It sounds like you had a good idea of how lasting businesses make it to begin with... not putting yourself on payroll for that long is difficult but totally worth it if you're in it for the long run. Best of luck in the coming years!

Thanks everyone.

To celebrate, I'm spending tonight auditing our accounts for year-to-date. Fun filled night for me.
