BMW CCA Raffle Drawing Today!

For those of you smart enough to pass on a 1 in 5,000 chance to win a brand new BMW with an MSRP of up to $100,075 with the purchase of a $25 ticket, you need not read this.

For those of you, like me, who bought the maximum number of tickets (7) and are already planning the trip to pick up your new BMW, the initial drawing is today. See: http://www.bmwcca.org/index.php?pageid=raffle

According to the link, they will notify the winners, but when? And, do they post the names of the winners somewhere, so in the unlikely () event I don't win, I'll know that the CCA people didn't award the cars to their own brothers and girlfriends?

From the link you've provided:

Winners will be notified shortly thereafter. The actual prize drawing will take place at Oktoberfest 2008 in Watkins Glen, NY.

It looks like if you have a winning ticket, you might know this fact but not precisely what you've won until the evening of Saturday Sept. 26, at the "Awards banquet and car show".

Right, but I'm wondering what "shortly" means to them. When can I assume that I'm not a winner? Since I didn't hear from them by the end of the day? If I don't hear by the end of the week? By the 15th of the month?

And I hope they're planning to give the names and perhaps city of residence of those who won, to promote transparency and confidence in the way that the winners were selected. The behind-closed-doors, "We'll call you if you're a winner" method, doesn't exactly inspire trust in the procedure. I hope there is more openness than that. Am I the only one who feels that way?

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think the winners are announced until the last get together on the last day of the BMW CCA Oktoberfest.

The winners will be publicly announced at Oktoberfest. They will be privately announced beforehand. Don't know what the big fuss is...

If anyone thinks this is a big conspiracy, I can take down the names and post them here - as I will be present when the announcements are made at Oktoberfest...

Worst case scenario, if you don't hear between now and the beginning of Oktoberfest. You can pretty much assume you are not a winner though - the 7 in 5000 chances are better than many other lotteries, but the odds are still stacked against you.

BMW CCA isn't some fly by night organization. They've been doing this for many, many years now.

No big fuss or conspiracy theories, just some wonderings and musings.

Did you get notified yet, I saw the video of the drawing they had a green mascot picking out the numbers. Everytime he stuck his hand in the basket 2 or 3, tickets would fall out.

I know, I know. I just didn't like the idea that I would hear if I won, but wouldn't hear anything if I didn't.

The video, which I did not know about, and about which there is no mention in any of the materials I received, including the card with my ticket numbers on it, is exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks for posting the link!

And the winners are . . .

I watched the video (link above), and they announced the winners by name. It's difficult to understand, and he really rambles it off fast for the last few, but I believe the winners are:

Elaine Campbell, Nipomo, CA
Kevin Bean, Aliso Viejo, CA
Don Nishner, Yorktown Heights, NY
________ Khamapirav, Jackson, TN
Louis Huvia, Stafford, VA
Alan D. Rock, Cincinatti, HO
Norman Wright, Cranberry, NJ

Sadly, despite the purchase of 7 tickets, it appears that I didn't win.

I'm sure you realize that's an unreasonable expectation. No contest notifies all the non-winners.

I guess that's generally true, but where you PAY for a raffle ticket - as opposed to just entering a contest by putting your name in for free - I can't think of any contest that doesn't somehow publicize the identity of the winner(s). Until I saw the link to the video of the drawing (thanks again for posting it), it didn't look like that was going to happen. But since they did post the video, I'm satisfied.

I bought one ticket, so that another CCA member gets to enjoy a brand new BMW.

Anyway, lottery never pays off, you get better odds going to Las Vegas.

I beg to differ there are seven people who would argue that point. There were roughly 36,000 tickets sold more or less. Those odds beats the Lotto by a long shot.

I hate to dredge up an old thread but I was just analyzing the new offering for this year and ran across this thread. Based on last year's results they sold ~36k tickets at $25 a pop meaning they brought it over $900,000. The total cost of the 7 cars they gave away was $370,075!!! Meaning they profited over half a million dollars. Maybe better odds than the lotto, but still a HORRIBLE bet. Now if they gave all the profits to charity (which they might - I don't know) and it was tax deductible I'd be more likely to give it a shot. This is like playing Keno in Vegas.
