Transmision clunk

Does anyone else out there have a tranny clunk when shifting from park to reverse or drive?

It has seemed to get worse, and I have had the "guibo joint" done, (which didn't do shi*)
and I just got it back from the dealer and now they say it is normal! WTF!!!!

Do I simply need to go to a different dealer or what?

Has anyone experienced this and found a fix without replacing the tranny?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jesse P

I notice mine did the same thing, but only when its on incline. What I do to prevent it is when I park incline i put the parking brake on the press the park button and when im ready to leave put the car in gear then take the parking break off and the tranny wont go clunk, it will be a smooth as normal.

My dealer did the DME retro fit and it has worked well. Others have done it with no success. Look at this explanation and talk to your service advisor. Search will be your friend in this forum. This subject has been talked about many times.

SI B12 15 08 and SI B 24 05 08

E65, E66 with N62TU (750i, 750iL) produced from 03/05 up to 09/07 - Various Driveability Complaints

SITUATION
Complains about one or a combination of the following situations, listed below:

1) The engine has a rough idle, or the idle fluctuates on the initial cold start when the outside temperature exceeds 59F.

2) Creep speed bucking.

3) Drivetrain "clunks jerks" when reaccelerating at low speed ("load reversal").

4) The vehicle jerks when accelerating from a stop ("throttle calibration too aggressive"), or the vehicle does not accelerate smoothly from a stop ("brief delay and then lurches forward").

5) Shudder and/or noise and/or surge and/or hesitation from the transmission during a cold start operation.

6) Harsh 2-1, 3-2 downshifts when coming to a stop ("harsh jolt/bang felt while slowing down").

7) Harsh jolt felt when reaching the top of a hill, driving uphill ("felt like a harsh 1-2 up-shift").

The driveability complaints are intermittent and they are not easily reproducible in the workshop. No fault codes are stored in the DME or EGS control modules. Countermeasures from SI B12 27 05 ("N62TU Engine pinging & idle fluctuation") were performed without success.

CAUSE
Combination of the DME and EGS software

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, and when the problem description matches one of those listed above, contact DME TeileClearing via the PuMA case titled "750 Driveability Retrofit".

I had the same clunk when shifting from park to drive or reverse. The dealer updated my software and it went away. My tranny also shifts a lot smoother. They wont do it because of that problem though. They were trying to fix the Logic 7 radio.

This is the correct way to park. There is a little pin in the trans that is used to lock it in place and the clunk is when it is under pressure and being released.

Bring it to the dealer...if you personally don't know a mechanic that routinely works on e65/66 then off to the dealer you go. Give us feedback after your visit.

I had the same clunk issue with my 03 sport. I brought the car in for an oil change and mentioned the clunk. Dealer said there were no error codes. A month latter the battery died, I had asked them to replace the battery in the prior visit but the assured me it was fine. Had battery replaced on second visit and asked the look at the clunk again. Dealer said it was the battery issue and they cleared all the error codes.

Yesterday I was driving the car and at a light I accelerated and the did not move finally a clunk and the car moved but would not upshift for about 60 seconds. I called the delaer and left the person who books the appointment and asked for the next appointment. They took me in this morning provided a rental and acknoldged this was the third time I had brought the car in for the same issue. I did need a few other minor issues attended to but I did not ask anything by the transmission to be addressed as I do not want the car back with the minor issues addressed but no resolution to the tranny.

Dealer called this afternoon and left a message that a new tranny will be delivered and installed tomorrow.

I am impressed that BMW is standing behind their product. I was driving my MB SL instead of the 7 series as it was no longer a nice car to drive. I am hoping I get the same car back I fell in love with. BMW handling this definitely is swaying me away from getting a new S Class and looking at the new 7 next year.

^^^Hmmmmm - impressed because it only took them 3 visits to acknowledge your problem. besides your not really getting a "new" tranny, just a refurbished one. anyway, good luck. hopefully your problem is fixed for good (or at least 6 months like sunny_j "new" tranny).

Was the retrofit fix out in 2007?

Guys - I am looking at CPO'd 2006 750i. In going over the service history, I notice that it had the following done: "Programming procedure prior to retrofitting" The defect code is 7260930200.

Could this be the famous 750i retrofit and DME program?

For cluncking sounds comming from parking on hills and slopes TRY THIS!

stop the car on a hill.
hold the brake.
engage the park brake.
stop the engine (without popping the key out)
the car will automatically shift to N.
WAIT a few seconds, then the rear breaks will engage (u can hear it esp with the doors open)
then shift to P, or pop the key out.

The sound comes from disengaging the P, while it was jammed to stop the wheels moving on a slope!

I have a 2004 745i w/ 73k miles. I do have the same clunk noise when parked on an incline and switch to drive/reverse. I do put the parking brake on to make the clunk noise a bit less. Still would like to find out how i can get it fixed.
