Like VTR said go with a dirt bike or dual sport in your case. Its just uber dangerous even for experienced riders. You will go down.

I have been riding since ~1964. Great sport/hobby, but seriousazz biz,
esp. out on the streets. For neophytes I strongly rec'd buying a cheapazz, very used dirt bike and learn some skills in the woods/vacant fields and an MSF riding course. Have done several coast to coast trips, a few good long runs up through upper Quebec, Nova Scotia, et al, and lots of "local" riding, in NE, NY and here on the fine two lane blacktops of western NC. One cannot be "too good" out there on the streets, imo. And, some excellent skills, a lil' paranoia and considerable luck, helps too. Keep it under a buck fifty and between the fences... thanks!
I was actually thinking of getting rid of it being that i wanted to get into a 750 or a 1000 for next spring, but i am going to loose to much on this bike. I just got it in june and if i sell now i am looking at a $3000 loss at teh minimum. Mind you its brand new and hasnt even reached a 1000 miles.

I have a general question that's been discussed between Jev and I. How on earth do bike riders manage to navigate the bumpy Calif. roads? Even our freeways have bumps and dips in them that make my car bottom out sometimes.
It seems like it would be much worse on a motorcycle.

I've been riding for 14 years, current bike since Feb 1996. I turned 100k miles on July 5th this year. Sadly it came two years later than I had hoped it would. I wanted to reach that point at 10 years, and I was on pace for that, but ...
Me and the bike at exactly 100,000.0 miles. ![]() I don't ride as much as I used to now. I got involved with track driving the Bimmer and that consumes a lot of my time. I also haven't been able to break loose from work for 2-3 weeks at a time anymore either. I used to do at least a 10 day trip each summer. I break free for a few hours now and then on a week day, occasional weekend rides. Need a change of scenery after 14 years of riding the same roads all the time.

I used to ride but took a hiatus for a while but have recently picked it back up again after taking another MSF course as a refresher.
Here is a pic of my bike, the Buell XB9SX Lightning in the middle, and some of the guys I ride with. The other bikes are a Triumph Speed Triple and a Ducati Monster S4R. |
