How much would you buy this car for?

Recognized as a possible scam by the Bimmerfest Community - KrisL

1999 BMW 323i with 107,000 miles on it. It is a salvage title. The car is sparkling clean with ALL repair records since it was salvaged 7 years ago. It's fully loaded with leather seats and everything. (I'm not exactly sure if it is a E46.

It is an e46. I wouldn't buy it salvaged for more than $8,000

When you say salvaged, does it mean it has been in an accident and re-built?

A car with a salvage title was totaled and in this case repaired.

I'd buy it for like $4,000 but wouldn't want it cuz who knows what will go wrong with it since the accident probably knocked all sorts of stuff out of alignment.

Drive it. Pay close attention to how it runs, are there any abnormal noises? Feel how it handles on the road. Does it pull or shake? Take it to a mechanic! See what they find. If all checks out you can get yourself a sweet car that will not sell for much but you, I'm sure, are not getting it to sell. Your getting it to drive. And with that you should get it for a very low cost, well under blue book. If there is something wrong or the seller will not agree to let you take it to a mechanic, walk away.

I would not buy any salvage vehicle, the resale value sucks and cannot be traded in, who knows if it was fixed properly.

Wouldn't touch a salvage car. Too risky and potentially lots and lots of headaches.

My 2 cents.

The fact that it`s been on the road for 7 years would (*probably*) indicate a pretty solid repair, but it`s *still* a salvage title, which is a real tough sell. Unless you can get it for an outrageously low price (offer them 5 grand for it), walk away....

Regards,
Bob

I love salvage titles myself - if you're buying a "relatively old" used car (older than 5 or 6 years) chances are you'er going to drive it into the ground and could care less about the resale value of the car. You are interested in the purchase price - and that salvage title gets you a sweet bargain.

I'd run the same car through KBB and see what the "fair" condition car would go for - same miles, everything the same, but no salvage title, then knock $2500 off that and offer it to the seller - chances are you could walk away with the car for around $5000. Considering it's got anywhere from 5 to 7 years of clean dirving since it was salvaged, most of the kinks should have been worked out by now.

A Carfax *may* show a clean history on the VIN for one reason -- there are legal, honest, "normal" ways that cars that are totalled and salvaged can be completely Re-VIN'd - a company that I've dealt with here locally does that with GM pickup trucks - they buy them from salvage yards and completely re-build them --- the vehicle you are driving may have the engine and drive train from vehicle A, the front body from vehicle B, the rear body from vehicle C, and either a custom built frame or a frame from vehicle D -- obviously none of those 4 original VIN's would be suited to that vehicle -- so you get a new VIN number dedicated to that "new" chassis and it has a clean history from the date that the VIN was issued. This only makes sense - as the vehicle is essentially a "new" vehicle built by the salvage reman company, and has pretty much nothing in common with any old vehicle. I believe there's a certain percent of the vehicle that must be replaced for this to take place - I don't know the exact numbers - and it may be different in the US than Canada as well - but this is a common practice nonetheless.

If it's a manual and it is decent as far as how it drives, I'd buy it.....but not for more than $5500. You can by the same car with a normal title for 7-8k with similar miles.

Why would someone selling a salvage car show a picture of another car with the exact same mileage that has a clean title.

Makes no sense.
Acutally using picutures of other cars to scam people on craigslist is pretty common. I know someone who's e30 keeps showing up in ads (pics were taken from a bmw board) all over the country, and everytime someone has tried to complete the deal it turns out to a scam.

I have no doubt you are correct (based on the changing 'facts'.

I inquired about the car to see how the scam goes, but no response as of yet.

In my search for an e46 I would browse craigslist pretty much every hour on the hour. Scams like these are so common I made a separate email address just to reply to these clowns and send them false information. I ran into over 20 scams in my first week of searching.
