The Darned'est Thing... No Jack Pads = Wind Noise

I bought this car a few months ago with 87k miles. It's not perfect but it had a lot of finishing touches I wanted already done and the mechanical stuff I can fix over time. From the beginning, the car had a very pronounced noise coming from what I thought was the upper control arm bushings and figured I'd "get to them". A while back I was doing some work on the car and found out that I do not have a single jack pad under the rocker panels. All 4 are gone. Did some research and prices range from $11 -15 each. I figured, I'll order them when I get the money together for the control arms. No big deal.

After a 2.5 hour ride round trip to the airport on a very windy day listening to this noise that I thought was an issue with the upper control arm bushings, I noticed every time the wind would gust the noise would get much louder. Cooincidence? I remember reading a post a while back about wind noise and jack pads. So, frustrated and a headache, when I got home I got out the 100 mph black duck tape and proceed to tape over the jack pad holes. What's it gonna hurt? Take it for a test drive...... THE NOISE IS GONE!!! I mean completely gone!!!!

Lesson of the story, if you are missing your front jack pads... and have a very pronounced noise coming from the front of your car around the footwell area.... try the duck tape!!!! One mechanic even told me it was the tires making the noise and that I needed to spend almost $500 for 2 new tires. And this guy makes a 6 figure salary/year as a mechanic?

Yep. Had this problem too. In my case sounded like it was around the window/in the door. BMW tried adjusting my door to be tighter to the point I had to really slam it closed. Didn't help. Within the next 24 hours I did a little reading and concluded it was the jack pad. Put duct tape over the hole to prove it. Had BMW readjust my door to proper position and made them give me a set of jack pads. Ended up costing my nothing other than the usual aggravation...

I'm confused. If the BMW jack pad is installed, there is no hole. If the BMW jack pad is not installed, then, well, duct tape might stop the wind noise (which is known to destroy the cloth in the headboard, btw) ... but the BMW jack from hell isn't going to work. You won't be able to change a flat tire.

So, you really have no choice but to install the BMW jack pad. Right?

See http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=267424 for more complete BMW jack pad details.

Jack pads have been ordered. Yes, the tape is temporary until the jack pads get here and only used to help identify the problem.

BTW, I have no idea what you are referring to with the following.... "(which is known to destroy the cloth in the headboard, btw)".

That's what I love about this site!!! People really seem to be on the ball. Thank you for that information!

Just placed my order for jack pads yesterday and hope they will arrive quickly. I found an excellent price at http://www.joetlc.com/jack-hole-cove...e-p-19884.html

This is what I love about Bimmerfest. A newbie like me can learn more even when I thought I had learned all there was to learn about these cute little jack pads!

I didn't know about this TIS! Thanks.

As for the cloth lining, I think the attribute is in the links I put in my original post here but basically in some Bimmers, the air rushes up the hole and then somehow enters in between the lining of the material that is in the pillars holding up the roof and the part above your head (I called it the headboard).

The cloth peels away from this force of air. There was a recall, if I remember correctly .... but I'd have to double check the sources in the original Bimmerfest posts I pointed to prior.

Price went from $8.99 to $13.99 just after I received my order.

Supply vs. demand. And obviously demand is currently high for these I ordered 4 a few months back. Installed 2 and kept 2 for future use.

Yeah, no clue what happened. Guess I got in under the wire. Maybe I should have ordered a few spares?

If you are missing your front jack pads and you have a weird suspension noise, I cannot stress the night and day difference in my car. I was convinced that I had issues with upper or lower control arm bushings or bad tires. A simple test.... tape over the holes!

Jackin' Up the Pads

So let me get this straight, Joe TLC gets a free link to his store from his Bimmerfest friends where he could sell countless jack pads and how does he repay the kind deed, by "jacking" his pad prices up 155%. Thanks for the heads-up Bluebee, I will look elsewhere for my pads.
