Bent rotor, am I being hosed?

I recently received a light indicating my "Brakes" need to be checked on my X5 3.0. I took it to a local BMW mechanic and was told my rotor is bent in the front and in addition I need pads on all tires which will result in whopping $975.00 repair bill.

There is no sound of metal to metal, the truck doesnt shake or drift to a particular side. Am I getting hosed because I am a woman?

replacing the rotors is pretty standard equipment for BMW's

Bent isn't really a term that should be used with rotors, maybe warped...... but bent???

that sounds about right for a full set of brakes front and rear with all new hardware (maybe a bit pricy, but not crazy, probably still a bit less than a dealer would charge)

surprised that all 4 need replacing at the same time, usually one set wears faster than the other

Quite frankly, the price quoted is about what a dealer would charge. Get a second opinion from a dealer. They should be able to quote you the rotor and pads over the phone.

order the rotors and brake pads from E bay. I did and also the brake pad sensors. These wear off along with the pads if they contact the rotors, the sensors will let the computer know that the pads are worn out hence the message on your dash. It is always advisable to replace all four rotors ,pads and sensors. If you have a friend assist you with the purchase and installation, It will be A lot less than the dealer. Good luck.

Being that you are in California, I am not sure of what the labor cost are there but I would recommend as others have that you purchase the brake pads for all 4 wheels and the front rotors online and then check with a few garages in your area and see what they would charge. Brakes and rotors are pretty standard stuff and do not need to be done at a dealer or even a specific BMW mechanic...IMHO.

I just had mine done for a total of me purchasing my own front pads & front rotors ($100.00 E bay -Premium Performance BLACK CROSS DRILLED BRAKE ROTORS FRONT) Pad were ceramic for $55.00 for under $250.00 including labor from my mechanic of $85.

FYI:

You may want to note that the OP started this thread back in June of 2006. The relevance or timing of this thread being pulled from the grave isn't quite clear...but suggestions directed toward the OP probably isn't necessary because if their brake pads/rotors haven't been changed by now...all I can say is WOW!
