M56 SULEV Engine Question

I recently had an issue starting my 2006 325ci BMW. I had it towed to my BMW Dealer. They spent a day looking at the car, and indicated that they could not find the problem. They first blamed the etahnol level of the gas. The dealer informed me that I would need to pay for the fuel pump to be replaced in order to stay under warranty. But, I was told that the fuel pump, fuel filter and regulator where integrated into the gas tank as one unit. They told me the cost was $7995 for the tank. They also wanted to charge me for draining the fuel from the system and cleaning the injectors.

I pushed back on them and contacted the DOA, then teh dealer retested the gas. Now it came up as normal. Then somehow they fixed the car, but could not tell me how.

All this aside, I am concerned about having the fuel pump, fuel filter and regulator SEALED into the gas tank and being non serviceable without spending $7995. Therefore, I was thinking of turning in the car at lease end, and leasing a 2009 328xi.

Therefore, I have the following questions:

1. Does the 2009 328xi SULEV engine have the same sealed gas tank and fuel pump issue? Or was this resolved somehow?
2. Does the integrated gas tank for my current vehicle (2006 325ci SULEV) really cost $7995?
3. If I live in New York, do I have to get the SULEV engine if I order a new car?

Thanks in Advance...

i highly doubt it is sealed, they are trying to get money. the fuel filter and fuel pump can be changed given a few hours by yourself.

No, it is definitley sealed, and you can not service any of the internal parts. I already did that research. It is hard to beleive, but true. I just could not find the price.

For the M54 engine, the fuel filter is an easy 20 min DIY as it's under the car, underneath the driver's seat. The M56 is weird.

What I love is the following pricing.

M56 Engine (albeit remanufactured)--- MSRP $6613 Tischer $5290

Gas tank for above:-----------------MSRP $7692 Tischer $6154

Can we have a big WTF?

("Well sir, the good news is that your SULEV engine is several hundred bucks less than an M54, but your fuel tank........)

Thanks Everyone, this is great information.

Also, it looks like the newer version of the SULEV engine (N51) has a plastic fuel tank and a servicable fuel pumps available for it on the parts listings. The prices for these seem to be within reason. Therefore it seems like they might have improved the design of the fuel supply on the SULEV engine (as it can now be maintaned for a reasonable price if the pump goes or filter clogs).

Otherwise, once the lease on my 2006 325 Coupe is up in April (with the expensive SULEV gas tank issue), I want to turn it in and get either the 328 Coupe (which is still SULEV here in NY, but I am assuming has the better designed tank\pump setup) or the 335 coupe. I test drove the 328 Coupe (230 HP) and it has more power than my current 325 coupe (186 HP). The sports mode on the automatic tranny also seems more responsive as it revs higher prior to shifting.

I am going to test drive the 335 Coupe soon. Once I do, I do not know if I will be able to turn back to a 328 though (but this is a risk I will take). An extra plus on the 335 coupe is that there are no SULEV issues to consider as I understand there is only one engine for it (and no SULEV variant).

Thanks Again to All.

Tisher will eventually redirect to bmwparts.com?

Yes. It is all the same place. As Kris listed, the easiest way to get to the site at least to remember is www.getbmwparts.com.

Tischer BMW ( www.tischer.com )is the actual physical BMW dealership located in Silver Springs, MD USA. To confuse matters further they are part of the Mile One automotive group, and their online parts site actually goes through a portal operated as trademotion.com. You can get to them through any of them but the www.getbmwparts.com will take you directly to the online parts ordering section.

don't worry that entire assembly for the M56 fuel tank (filter pump and sending unit) can be found low mileage in a wrecking yard for ~$1500

... the people who buy this part from the dealer are probably the same people who pay the dealer to do spark plugs...

Trademotion seems to be a consortium and/or portal to all things automotive. When I used to purchase parts online for the Lincoln Mark VIII and/or my Mom's Mercury Sable, I was always sent thru Trademotion no matter which online dealer I picked.
