Exclamation E30 1991 325i 5000 rpm engine cutout problem

I've got a manual 325i that has a problem where the engine cuts out at around 5200 rpms. It does not stall or anything but won't go past this point. It does this in just about every gear and does not do it if you slowly accelerate up past this point. It mainly just doest if if you hammer it or floor it. I have done alot of work to this car lately and really am stumped about this problem. The things I've done to it this summer include dinan chip, scorpian exhaust, k&n intake, oxygen sensor, thermometor, manifold gaskets and more.

Anybody had this problem or got any ideas whats wrong

youre hitting the redline. your gauge is probably off a little bit which is why it cuts off there rather than around 6k.

btw. dont hit the redline every gear.

I've heard of this happening alot, Its not a rev limiter your hitting is it? someone on e30tech had the same problem only i think it was cutting out at like 4500rpms. don't remember what the problem was but i'm pretty sure it wasn't the guage being off.

i would say most likely the rev limiter is telling you to shift. theres hardly a need to hit redline or get within 500rpms of it, because the closer you get, the more power youre losing, both torque and hp. i only hit 4800 bout once a month, to get any loose carbon off the valves, plus its nice to let the engine unleash the fury every once in a while....

I don't think it could be the rev limiter becuase I have a dinan chip which makes the rpm go to 6900 redline.

Hello how did you ever correct this issue. 91 325i ran to redline nice the other day, today it hangs at 5000 feels like it just cuts out. Pulls strong to 5000 then no more won't go past that.

I don't want to throw a lot of money at it guessing

Would be nice
To know how you fixed the issue

Thanks

Take your valve cover off and see if you have any broken valve springs.

It idles fine and runs great up until 5k why would it do that smoothly if a spring was bad? It almost seems like it happens after the car got wet like in a rain.

I doubt it's a problem w cam or rockers or so

could have bad/cracked coil/spark plug wires, fouled/dirty/old/too big of gap spark plugs, rotors worn, dizzy cap cracked/dirty contacts.

i would first start with a tune up (depending when the last time you did it) then find an o-ring or gasket to help seal the dizzy cap from moisture entering.

you could also have a loose/too much gap cps. tryin to give easy stuff first
