OMG! thank you SO much for this thread! I'm finally getting around to changing my wiper blades, and am so glad I googled upon this site. I used to take my car to Mountain View BMW, but stopped once my 4 yr plan ran out. Thank you for your detailed research re. this topic. I, for one, truly appreciate the extensive information outlined here. You just saved me ALOT of time. My questions are:
1. Does anyone know of a reputable online place that will sell OEM wiper blade rubber refills WITH METAL guides for relatively cheap? since it seems most of the south bay dealers are still living in the dot com bubble and have forgotten that there's a RECESSION going on!

2. Amazon sells a set of Bosch complete wiper replacements for around $30 (well, under $40). Good reviews, and looks much easier to replace than the rubber part. Anyone gone that route, and any issues with it? I've read about how 1 person replaced the blades and ended up scratching the windshield! I figure, for $30, maybe it's a better way to go.

TIA for all your help!

I only get them from Amazon. Free shipping, too, since it's over $25, and for me that's overnight as they come from a warehouse in NC.

Unfortunately for us in the SF south bay area, Mountainview BMW, Stevenscreek BMW in San Jose, and Fremont BMW all have horrendous prices for wiper inserts (and Stevenscreek BMW has horrendous service all around).

So, the folks who say "go to the local dealer" don't live in the south bay for sure as they'd die if they paid the kind of prices these three elitist shops charge.

However, reading this thread, you should find plenty of places where you can mail order the wiper inserts and ask to make sure the prices include the metal blades. Good luck!

Threading the new wiper blade in was a big PITA IIRC, so if you can get the Bosch assemblies for that price I'd go that route.

Thanks everyone! It looks like Tischer BMW would be about $16 for 2 of them, so I'll probably just go Amazon route. That darned shipping! BTW, thestig, just saw your 'cameo' in the Google superbowl commercial...had never heard of 'you' before.

For xref, Mark@EACTuning offers the refills at a decent price:

Set of two inserts: $6.61
Driver side with bow: $17.63
Passenger side with bow: $17.26

The key question is always whether or not the price includes the two metal bands or just the rubber insert ...

I can't tell from the description whether EAC's $6.61 inserts include the metal (does anyone know if it does?)...

Did your AutoHauz inserts come with the two metal bands?

I have a funny story to share about this. I threw away my wiper blades (1990 535i), thinking I could find a replacement for them at the auto parts store. Big mistake! None of the advertised replacements (entire wiper blade) fit. I ended up cracking my windshield after the 5th time. LOL, it was an expensive lesson to learn as a BMW noobie.

Interestingly, I had a similar wish-I-had-saved-the-bands story ...

I bought the refills which just happened to have the metal bands; so I threw away the old bands.

As a favor to a friend, I bought a second set and, guess what ... it didn't come with the bands.

In hindsight, I wished I had saved the old metal blades too!

Lesson learned!

BTW, here are the windshield wiper removal instructions from the Bentley shop manual.

Bluebee,
No, the autohausAZ refills are the rubber only... the metal strips on my wiper are the newer with points at the top as in your picture, thanks for all your informative posts!

Mark at EAC kindly confirmed the $6 wiper refills have no need of the metal inserts because they come with their own hard plastic backing (and metal tips) apparently.

For the record, here is a cross-link thread of the same topic, namely "Recomendations on how to buy wiper blades for the E39".

Plus see this related thread (covering modifications of the E39 with an E60 wiper arm).

I don't know why, but I always chuckle when I see a reference to Tompkinson BMW/Dodge. It's just such a strange combination of marques.

What's across the street? Jones Ferrari/Kia?

Wow, I just call my local Car Quest auto parts and buy either the inserts or the whole wiper blade assembly! No shipping and they show up the next day!

Those would not work on my 2000 540, I already tried!

As a cross reference, here is a thread where the E39 wagon owner gave up on the E39 wiper blades altogether. He replaced the fronts with E60 front wiper arms and the rear with Bosch Icon Blacketless blades.

eh i went through Bavauto.com about $30.00 shipped to door next day and basically just bent the parts that hold the blad in and slid it through connecting the metal pieces on the side first, keep checking to make sure it is linedd up then bend them back. no issues and work fine. Just take a look at the blades before you pull them apart.

In response to a recent wiper blade thread, I added the following to the bestlinks thread. As always, if you know of better links, please add to the bestlinks thread so all continually benefit from every single action:

For the crosslinked record, today a poster asked about wiper blade refills:
- E39 (1997 - 2003) > E39 wiper blades??

For those interested, there are a lot of replies in that thread which I'll not repeat here ... but which are all in line with everything already stated in this thread.
