I have a green stock E36 328i 1998, I don't want to just put a loud exhaust system on it, I want to actually put some cool things on it. like a chip and a supercharger, or a turbo.
I'm hoping to get around 250 HP and 250 lb/ft toque. or some where in those numbers. Im also kinda on a budget, so I wondered if a super-charger would be a good idea, or a chip. Any suggestions....................

My budget is around $5000, The cars only worth about $9,000 though, so I'm not sure if I would want to put more than half of its value for upgrades.

If you are only looking to make 250hp, then you really should have just picked up an M3. I found due to the age of our cars that suspension upgrades really add a lot to the driving enjoyment.

As someone who just got their license, the last thing you need is more torque and HP. What you need is driving skills. You don't have the skills to fully use the HP and torque you have, and until you get some experience more power will just put you and others in danger. If you want to go fast, invest in some performance driving classes....this will let you go faster with what you have and have a lot more fun. A 328i have can go plenty fast, especially in cornering and top end...certainly fast enough for you lose your license quickly if you aren't carful Good tires are also a very cost effective way to get more performance.yes I am a dad and my 11 year old has claimed my 328 for his first car...so I'm practicing Last edited by squirtdad; 12-02-2008 at 09:54 AM. |

I recommend this set up to anyone. It really tightened up the handling, and body roll as well as lowering the cars stance a bit. It's a great street setup. If I were going to track the car I would have gone the coilover route, but I'm just a spirited back road bomber so this setup is perfect. You may also want to consider brake upgrades. Going fast is great, but stopping fast is even better. |

Yea lowering your car is perfect for a new driver!!!!!!!! Waiting on "I bottomed out my oil pan/dented my side skirts/curbed my wheels thread."
If you have 5k budgeted for the car save it for maintenance and speeding tickets. Good god e36's are becoming the new e30's of stupid threads.

I have an 96 328ci, which comes with the X-harness cross brace and added the strut tower brace. It provides great support for cornering. The car came with a 2000 M3 suspension system, 17"rims, skirts, bumpers, etc. It also has the M50 OBD1 intake manifold, dual exhaust and was sharked. All I added was a AFE stage II CAI, 225/45 & 245/40 Kuhmo Tires. The car comes stock with 191 HP and I BELIEVE it is at 235 now. Anyways it tops out at 135 and gets there rather quick. If you mirror those Mods, you should be happy and safe. P.S. I don't think they make a chip for your car, you have to buy a programmer. Ask a Tech to be sure and take the advice from above, search the threads on priority of modifications.

I would go for the following :
- Do the famous manifold swap of the M50 to gain lots of hp in one step. - Remap the ECU with the manifold upgrade (Preferably but not essential) - Change the rear stock muffler. - CAI - Reasonable lower suspension kit. (not coilover) This should be lower than your 5000$ and you can reach 230hp.
