E46 - Timing chain / Tensioner Question

Hello all, I'm new to this post and need help. I own a 04 325i E46 w/51k miles. When starting the engine this morning it immediatly shut down within seconds. Thereafter when I cranked the engine it freewheels and sounds like the timimg chain / tension. (no compression). I am a master mechanic of 25 yrs with extensive tools. Has anyone ever experienced this and if the chain / tensioner has failed is the E46 an interferance engine? Also I need recommendations on a procedural manual.

Thank you
