318 losing coolant, possibly head gasket?!

hi all
about 6 months ago i bought a 318 ci sport. it sat on my drive way for 3 months while i awaited the return of my liscence.

after about 3 weeks of running the coolant low light came on. at that stage i was having to put about 0.5 - 1 ltr of coolant in every 3 weeks or so. as time has passed i am now topping up every couple of days, and im worried.

its runs perfectly no overheating ,noise, stuttering etc, if it wasnt for the warning light i wouldnt know there was anything wrong. i had a blown head gasket on my mondeo st24 and there was no mistaking there was something wrong with that.

no mayo on the engine cap but there is some on the dip stick, i was under the impression it collected on the cap if any where.

any suggestions as to what the problem is or things i might check befor condeming it would be greatly appreciated
many thanks

If you see fluid leaking out then probably your expansion tank is cracked. White smoke coming out the tail pipe is a sure sign of a bad head gasket.

i cant see any cracks or leaks, but having said that it is pretty hard to get in for a good look, as for the smoke its not an issue.

i cant help thnking it would be more noticable if the head gasket was on its way, but thats probably wishfull thinking on my part
