E36 320i touring

I have just inherited an N-reg 320i touring. It has a hole in the exhaust prior to the silencer which i will fix soon, but i wanted to know how much i should expect to pay for it?

Also there is a considerable lack of power. my old 1990 Rover 216 (yes yes I know) feels much faster in all gears at all revs. Also there is a fair bit of smoke coming from the tailpipe when started and revved.

I probably wouldn't have paid for a car in such a state but it is so good to drive, even with the problems, I wondered if these are simple issues to remedy.

As you may be able to tell I am not massively mechanically minded so any advice would be much appreciated.

cheers.

take it to good mechanic, im sure the UK forumers here will help you out with advice. I've no clue what is rover 216, but 320i with 6cyl engine is a kind of car that needs to be revved to be driven quickly. Leaking exhaust doesn't help btw. Check rear shock mounts, flush cooling system, watch the temp needle and hope engine won't overheat. Good car otherwise.
