Sent you a PM.

But, no word yet on a fix.

Sigh. You can add me to the list of affected cars. 2009 E90 335i.

It's only happened twice, and no problem after restarting the engine. The first time, the radio button did nothing but the computer button on the right worked. The second time, both buttons were out.

The clock was working in both cases. I don't have iDrive but do have Logic7.

Interesting to read everyone's experience. I have a 2 month old 2009 328xi and this happened last week. It was disconcerting to be greeted with silence when the car was started. no idrive, base stereo. I thought it was bluetooth related, but I don't remember now why I thought that then. It resolved after the car was turned off and the fob removed. I just added this to my running list of flaky unknowns (next to heated steering wheel shutting off on it's own) but not recurrent to prompt me to have it serviced.

I'm hoping the BMW engineers are paying attention to this. It isn't a serious problem, but it really shouldn't be there at all.

seat belt fix didn't work for me

I tried bmwbadboy's seat belt workaround, and it did not work for me. I powered the car on with seat belt on, no radio. Powered off. Undid seat belt. Powered car on. Display went through its usual warm up, the the big middle red seat belt warning indicator came on (when you would normally hear the chime). No chime, no radio.

Bmwbadboy -- are you doing something different?

The problem seems to be getting more frequent -- 2-3 times a week now. Oddly enough, I find myself hoping for a hard failure.

335i convertible, Logic 7, CA, no idrive, no phone, happens in cold and warm weather.

Guess I'll keep the E-39 for a couple more years. Everything works fine.

Just came from the dealer today. They were able to reproduce the problem (surprise) and said that BMW is aware of the issue and they are awaiting a "software fix". No firm date yet for that fix.

thats good news about the software fix. The problem happened today. No sound, but all the radio displays worked. I took off my seatbelt and waited for the chime to sound. Once the chime sounded the radio sound was back on.

I took off the seatbelt while the engine was on, and the car was moving and waited for the chime to go off.

I called my dealer today and they were clueless about the problem. What dealer did you take it to?

This has happened to me 5 times in the last month. I'l start driving and my radio will just show the clock. Voice Dial won't work either. I tried shutting the car off and starting up again at a few stop lights with no success.
Taking it to the dealership tomorrow. I'll let you guys know what the outcome is.

'Happened to me again yesterday. Again, I shut everything down, got out of the car, locked it, and walked away. I came back holding the fob high, unlocked the car and all, and everything was fine. I think it's a startup problem. The work around is a reboot which takes place when the fob is out of range for a while. I'm pretty sure this is a comfort access/non-idrive problem. They might be able to come up with a software fix, but I bet it won't be easy.

So much for that theory. O.k.... it's a non-idrive thing. Still try the close it up, lock it down, and return work around. I bet it'll work.

I tried the seatbelt fix the other day and it did not work. I waited until the icons showed up on the dash.

How long do you have to wait?

I also do not have Comfort Access, so that's not a factor.

No comfort access. I turn the car off, pull out the fob, reinsert it, and all is OK. Mine seems to be happening less frequently. Once every few weeks now. After 7000 miles, it's the only "problem" that I've had.

Thumbs down

No comfort access, no i-drive. Started car today radio dead screen totally blank (stock radio). Got to work went out a couple hours later and radio fine. WOW!!! Guess BMW's still having the same type of electric problems since the last one I bought new in 1986.

This is now a more severe problem than I originally thought.

It happened again last night. No big deal not having radio. But then, when I was parking, I noticed that PDC (parking distance control) didn't kick in even when I was only about 6 inches from the car in front of me. PDC was on (green LED), but I guess the alert sounds come from the speakers!! No sound at all to warn me...

I turned off the car, waited about 30 seconds, restarted, and still broken. I had to get out of the car, lock it, go into the house, and then when I came out, both radio and PDC worked again.

I think you may also run into this issue if you use both key fobs because your radio settings are set to your fob, aren't they? If my wife uses her key, she has her own presets programmed, etc. Try to consistently use the same key each time you drive and that may correct your problems. For example, preset 1 when I use my fob is set to Sirius channel 197 (The Virus), but when she drives, preset 1 changes to Sirius channel "The Heat."

Nope. This is a problem with the cars. My wife doesn't use my car at all and I still get the problem from time to time. 'Have to shut everything down, walk away, come back, and it all works. I think it's some sort of software boot issue.

Well after 2 months of no problems it happened to me twice yesterday in 80 degree heat - and I tried the seat belt fix and it didn't work either - the first time the warning light and the big icon came on but no chime, then the big icon stopped showing up on the dash as well - 10 mins later after locking and walking away it was fine

My dealer is lost in the clouds and knows nothing about a fix in the works - anybody hear any updates about that?

Yes, that is what I was told. It is a software problem related to system startup and that's why most times if after the problem occurs you shutdown and wait several minutes, the system resets itself and everything is fine.

Engineers are working on a solution, but don't expect it will be ready until June/July timeframe. That's the last update I have.

If that is all true, that is great news. It is very rare that it happens to me, but it has happened at least once since my last post to this thread.

The next issue with be getting the update....trying to get them to give you the update and what other problems the new update may bring with it!
