^ You'd do better if you posted pictures because it sounds like you are saying there are speaker wires tapped into your OBDII port...which would not make sense, or be good at all.

...there is no way to play an iPod THROUGH the OBDII port...what it might be is a way the previous owner used to "communicated" with the computer with some software he/she had on a laptop or something...

Congrats on the car and welcome to the fest!

ON a used BMW 1st order of business is always to address maintenance. WHat has been done, what needs to be done and what will need to be done. If everything is up to date there, then you can look at the cosmetics.

If you provide more info, you can get more specific answers.

Mileage? Maintenance records? Options? Dirveability? Codes or issues? etc.

THe WIKI points out the common weak spots on the E46 so you can determine if you need to deal with those (cooling system; window regulators; CCV; CABs; battery etc)

Thanks. Yea well i know it needs CABS and that's about it. I took it to a local mechanic shop and they checked the whole car an that was the only problem and the milage is 119000. I got it pretty cheap to and the engine is super clean. Sorry for not being to specific I don't know much. I'm sure it has the premium audio package and possibly the sport because it has steptronic. It's also pre wired for hands free phone and universal garage door opener. Oh and drives perfect. Handles good over 100 M.P.H.

Sport package is good

If it hasn't been done, you need to do a cooling system replacement right away. THis is a known weak point on teh E46 and can lead to disastrous results if it fails. If you can DIY it is not that expensive and a fairly easy DIY (from all I have read). You can get a kit from ECS Tuning or BImmer Parts. It should run you around $700 or so for everything IIRC.

CABs are also a DIY able item and not expensive though you amy want to consider new arms at that mileage. The Meyle HD are a popular choice and not that expensive.

Some things that come to mind...
Fuel filter replacement
Plugs
Power steering fluid replacement
Transmission and rear differential fluid change
brake bleed
Shocks, sway bar links likely need replacing if original.

All of these are worth considering if they haven't been done recently but definitely the cooling system is #1 if it hasn't been done. Usually recommended to change it out between 80K and 100K miles.

Foor some relatively cheap "fun" stuff...Clear corners and sides really dress up the look as do black grills on that colour (look sgrey with black trim). Silver gauge rings and red needles look good too.

THat engine looks nice and clean. Hopefully it is due to care and attention and not a shampoo. The Maintenance history should tell you that.

Teh fluid changes are critical for BMWs so don't forget those (oil, diff, tranny, PS, brakes)
Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

Read up on this stuff in the WIKI. It has lots of DIY links and vids. If you get stuck, the forum has the answers and if you REALLY get stuck, Ping Smolck. He's the resident guru on all things E46. He can change out a water pump on the side of the road in 20 minutes!!

A Bentley Manual is a huge help as well.

If you are going to do the plugs (due if not changed recently) you may want to do the Valve cover seal as well. QUick DIY and they are known to fail eventually.

It looks like you are starting with a clean and well running car. A little bit of preventative maintenance and it will be good for another 120K!!
