X5 navigation update for 2009
Hi guys,
my question is very simple. I want to update my navigation maps on a X5. Of course I will not do it myself I will let the dealer do it. Still a guy there told me it will cost me $500 to do it and the maps will only be available in the mid of 2009. Now for an upload of general data it seems awfully lot of money. Can anyone help me with average price for such a service. it's my first car with navigation and I am not sure. Is there a way that I can do it myself? |

The 09's update is a $199 DVD disc. Depends on the year of yours. $300 labor?

Is the navigation update available already or the guy at BMW actually told me the truth?

You can go to the navteq website and check for any updates to the maps. No programming needs to be done. If you need an update there are several updates that can be done under warranty if certain problems exist such as transmission shift issues. Head over to X5 world and search over there on how to get this done. Basically you tell the dealer that one of these problems exist and they will update the software. All the software is updated so you will have all "fixes" to date.

What year X5 are you driving? The last post makes good sense too.

Around a month ago, my dealer told me they only have the 2008 Navteq dvd. I ordered the 2009 Navtec dvd from the Navteq website. I have a 2008 x5 4.8i. I think the dealers don't always get the updates as soon as they come out. What irritates me is I bought my 2008 X5 in May of 2008 and they gave me a 2007 Navteq dvd. Pretty slimy, petty move in my opinion. I've met pimps that have more integrity. Anyhow, the 2009 dvd from Navteq cost me $199 like the guy above said. I have no idea why they'd try and stiff you with labor charges but you should call him on it.

I dont know exactly what type of upgrade you are referring to but, I just got a CPO 2006 X5 and I wanted to update the NAvigation, so I asked the local dealer and they quoted me $280 for the specific DVD for my car. I then went to Navteq website and ordered the same DVD from them. Saved me $65.
BMW gets the DVD from them as well. |

Thanks guys. You've helped a lot. It's actually my friends car. It's a 2008 X5 4.8i. I have a 2004 X3 2.5i. So he asked me to post instead of him.
Anyhow your input is greatly appreciated. |

RTFM! It goes in the fricking slot in the dash. Eject old one, put in new one. what's so hard to figure out.

I have a 2007 and it's in my manual. It's the lower DVD slot; push the button to eject the old one and insert the new one label side up.

does anyone know how to get the latest firmware for the navigation system. I have a 2003 (10/02 build date) BMW X5 4.6si....I came across a version of the firmware but it was for the 4.8. For those of you who don't know, the nav system in the 4.8 series has the ability to change the viewing settings to a 2d and/or a 3d so instead of always viewing your navigation from the standard over the top view, you can actually change the dimension so it allows you to view down to eye level (kinda like the portable garmin unit)....it also changes how you can search for specific locations by name. I have always been disappointed in the lack of the ability to do a user-friendly search for a location (ex: running a search by destination, it gives you categories like shopping centers, atm, etc...it's very generic and I almost never find the location this way......the only way to be concise is to have the address of the location.....with the newer version, you can type in the name of the restaurant for example and it will pull it up by destination or location.....
so, if anyone knows how to get the latest firmware or if you have the ability to use a newer version I would appreciate it.....I would also love to get a better understanding if someone has more details on this issue.....thanks |

I'm also interested in purchasing from www.bmwnav.net so if anyone here has any experience with them, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion.
Thanks! |
