My first Bimmer

Just an old snapshot of my first car. When I bought it in Germany I was told in was an early 70's body with a later Ti engine dropped into it. When the motor went and we tore it down we found out different. It did have the Ti dual Solex carb setup, shaved, ported, and polished head, dome pistons, etc. But a new head gasket for a Ti engine did not fit. After research from a local dealer in Karlruhe they said it was some prototype 70's race engine. All I know is that when it war running it was fast as all get out but we never did get it put back together and running. Other mods included the front air dam shown (no bumper) a rear spoiler, 5 point harness, safety glass in the front windshied, and an old school recaro bucket seat. May have been more done but that was 20 years ago and all I remember now. I do know the beast handled really well and on the Autobahn you could really feel the car "settle" as the speed increased. Probably the best handling car I've ever owned up to my current 330CI ZHP.

That's a 1974 Bavaria.

The 1973 Bavaria still had the "normal" front bumper like the prior years. The only difference that I recall was that the bumper guards were inverted on the '73 compared to the '72 (I owned a '72 for 14 years after I bought it from my father (original owner) back in 1980 -- sold it in 1994 stupidly).

The 1974 Bavaria (and the 1974 3.0CS) has the big bumpers like shown in your picture. It may have a build date in 1973 (like many 1974 cars), but it is a 1974 model year car. I can't imagine the original owner not knowing he had a 1974 year model car since it was such a dramatic change (the addition of the huge bumpers) at the time. By the way, the same large bumper addition occurred with 1974 model year 2002s. The BMW club fanatics were sick over these things (aesthetically, large weight addition, etc), so it was a big stink at the time.

hmmm that's interesting...

well that kinda sucks because it says 1973 on the title lol. So it could technically be a '73 with the '74 bumpers on it, but like you say, i don't know anyone that would chose this bumper over the stylish one that came with the earlier models, unless they were concerned about their safety haha.

I'll look into it.

Its just strange because it has a Catalogue from the dealership it came from, like a promo packet for the Bavaria/3.0, and its from 1973 as well...

very strange...

Well, it wound up in a couple of other 2002's. We just parted it out and about all that was left was the shell. It doesn't show in the pictures but the rocker panels were a rusty mess as was the trunk around the gas tank. Lots of body work would have went into it if the motor had not gone bad.

The was a beautiful black one in Neureut while I was over there with the great wide body kit on it. It was a beautiful car and I still have vivid memories of drooling over it, LOL!!

Well,

Most of these cars are long gone, unfortunately. The touring was an Euro 2000tii. The blue coupe was a Euro 3.0csi. The red coupe was a Euro 635csi. The blue shell in the 'speakers' pic (only empty headlight showing) was some kind of '60's Lancia. The engine on the stand is a hopped up '87 325i engine (2.8L, J&E hi compression, cam, porting, lite & smooth rods & crank, etc). The little black car is a Lancia also. The dog is a Samoyed. You probably know the rest!
