Spare 325i e46 Key

Hi,

Forgot to mention on my previous thread, but does anyone have any tips on how i can acquire a spare key for a 325i e46, i did ring a BMW dealer who gave me a price for the key of 100 which i thought was very reasonable, but you know what its like trying to penny pinch!!! is there a way i can get one cheeper?

i was told the car can lock its self if you leave the keys in it?, i had a seat cupra r before the bmw and that only locked itself if you opened the door with the key fob and did not open the door, once the door had been opened by hand it would not lock itself!.

Long winded question i know but your input is greatly appreciated!!

many thanks purple monkey

Do you want it just for opening the doors, or do you want to drive the car with it?

All E46's come with an engine immobilizer that prevents startup unless the proper key is used. All original keys, be they 'electronic' or plastic (valet or wallet kind) come with an embedded RFID chip that disables the immobilizer and allows the engine to start and run. When manufactured, the engine computer is keyed to 10 copies of the RFID chip for the keys, of which you get 3 or 4 when purchased new, BMW holding the remaining chips in escrow. If you manage to lose all 10 keys, with mucho money you purchase a new engine computer and have the dealer install and program it in (that gets you a new round of 10 keys to lose).

Hence, if you want to start the engine with your new key, you have to buy it from the dealer (who orders it from Germany). Generic 'BMW' blank keys from eBay, etc., if you can get them laser-cut to your remaining key, will only let you operate the doors and the alarm (if so equipped), but will not start the engine.

if all you want is a key to open the doors, the valet key is much cheaper than the remote key. By the time you buy an ebay key and find someone to cut it for you, it would probably cost the same as a valet key from the dealer
