Need a new TV series to watch

House of cards won't be available until 2/2015. Currently watching Boardwalk Empire but I hear about a lot of great shows.

What are you watching? opcorn:

Nothing on the air-networks that come close to the level of the cable-networks dramas.

If you haven't watched The Bridge I think the first season is on Netflix. The second season just ended.

At the moment, the series I'm watching is the American League Championship Series.

Later on, I will watch the NLCS.

A body is found literally straddling the border between Mexico and Texas involving police from both sides of the border. It's about that contrast, corruption in the Mexican police, and most of all excellent acting between Demian Bechir and Diane Kruger.

'Hell on Wheels.' Western, based in Chyenne Wyoming. Railroad camp and fledgling towns. Not bad. On hiatus until Nov. 8th. Here's a longer description. All episodes viewable online, good news for me as I missed the first, 10 total this year, it's 4th. My first season with it.

Hell on Wheels is an American Western television series about the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States. The series, which features Colm Meaney, Common, and Dominique McElligott, follows the Union Pacific Railroad and its surveyors, laborers, prostitutes, mercenaries, and others who lived, worked and died in the mobile encampment called "Hell on Wheels" that followed the railhead west across the Great Plains. In particular, the story focuses on Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier (played by Anson Mount) who, while working as foreman and chief engineer on the railroad, initially attempts to track down the Union soldiers who murdered his wife and young son during the American Civil War. - wikipedia

Of those mentioned season one of the bridge is solid. They do at least have mexicans speaking spanish... Pet peeve when other shows put people in other countries speaking english with accents (so lazy). The leads break some from convention and have some okay quirks but the latino lead is a bit too stereotypical. Overall the villain is a bit outlandish so the season loses steam as you learn who is behind the murders and the why of it is a bit eyerolling. Better than most network and free cable tv. I stopped quickly into season 2.

The Killing seasons one through three are above average tv. Season 4 was a train wreck with a series ending almost on par with the Dexter atrocity. For the first 3 seasons they trust the audience to pay attention but ultimately it still has a safe for free cable tv approach. Strong leads with pretty real personal issues. Certainly nice to watch a show about murder where it isn't resolved in 42 minutes. Some people grew tired with the very long murder mysteries but the actual series takes place over a short amount of time.

Orange is the New Black is pretty bad in the first two episodes but eventually they stop focusing on the awful lead (it is based on her book) and the show blossoms into a very funny ensemble comedy. Not gritty, real or flashy but some super creative characters. So many really good characters it does put to shame most other TV comedies that lack even 1/10th of the creativity - Red, Pornstache, Crazy Eyes, Pensatucky, they all get in your head.

If you want to take a time trip, then the ten year old HBO show The Wire still stands as the best in well...maybe forever. Nothing else as complex or maddening to watch. Brilliantly written, it is an incredible undertaking. It starts as a cop show but as the years roll by it delves into the docks, the education system, etc. It's an entire Dickensian tale of a city in decay. At the end I heard they had over 60 characters.

Justified is very much Elmore Leonard's style of characters and dialogue (based on one of his short stories). If you liked Out of Sight or Get Shorty, it is the same sarcasm and too-cool attitude that defined those movies. Takes three or so episodes for it to find its footing as the pilot and second episode still weren't sure what to do. Good anti heroes with some emmy award winning work from a few of the villains who last entire seasons (or more). Lots of recurring characters. More than it seems like on the surface but in the end it's just still cool lines and flashy characters.

If you can last through the season where they're on Hershel's farm talking about right and wrong for 10 episodes, then you will stick with it probably forever. No pain can compare to that season. Didn't think myself a murderous person until about halfway into that season and then I only wanted to slaughter Hershel and his family using sharpened dominoes and poisoned cobbler.

Ahahaha, i remember that season. I kept waiting for something disastrous or crazy to happen, but I felt like Hershel just wouldn't shut up.

And then he lost his leg. LoL

I have a feeling this season of "The Walking Dead" will be much better. It's one of my favorite shows, which is hard to believe because I've always hated zombie flicks... LOL!!!
But this show was WAY different.

Have you tried Vikings? There are two seasons out right now. It's waaaaayyyy better than that idiotic "Sons of Anarchy" show, which is basically just a soap opera that happens to have motorcycles.

Peaky Blinders is one I just found - Season 1 is on Netflix now, and Season 2 is showing in the UK now, so I expect it on Netflix in a little while. Only 6 episodes in season 1 and we're half way through.

One of my clients is big on TV series but last winter, for some reason she hadn't gotten into Vikings yet, this about 3 or 4 episodes into season 2. She looked into it on Amazon prime and watched the first 5 episodes her first night (?!). It's pretty good. A few weak spots but oh well.

Just watched big parts of the New Year's marathon of Walking Dead on AMC. Much better than I imagined. Believable emotion. The whole treatment is light years better than any of the original movies ever came close to.

Vikings back up on Thurs, Feb 19th.

Life from 2007 was one of my fav shows nobody seemed to have watched. Everyone I've recommend to it was hooked by the fourth show! And it's only a season and a half long. So great filler until HOC is out. Each episode has it's own stuff but there is an underlying theme that's cool to see unfold.

Exonerated after 12 years in prison, former LAPD cop Charlie Crews has his life and job restored, but the unconventional thinker brings a new Zen attitude to his work, as well as a fierce resolve to catch the real culprits in his own unsolved case.
