Blame it on the ignition switch?

Hey all,
Have an unusual problem with my car. I was sitting in it with the radio on and the car running, idling in a parking lot. After about 15 minutes or so the radio just cut out. Car was fine but the radio turned off entirely and would not turn back on.

So I turned the car off to see if I could reset it, but when I turned the ignition switch to turn it back on, nothing happened. The started didnt even attempt to turn over. No clicking noise, nothing. I originally thought it was the battery so I had the car jumped, but same results. Lights turned on, windows rolled down, etc, but couldnt make the radio turn on and car wouldnt start. Is it possible I activated some sort of anti-theft feature?

I had it towed to a mechanic and they suggested the ignition switch, but that doesnt explain whats up with my radio. Any ideas? Ever seen anything like that? Its a 99 328i with no other problems I know of. About 120K miles.

Thanks for any suggestions!

How old is the battery ? Four years is the average life expectancy....given your car`s age,the second battery is probably on it`s last legs....this can cause all sorts of wierd problems like you`re experiencing. Auto Zone has good replacements for around $90.

Its at least 3 years. I did try to have it jumped though and that didnt seem to help, even while the car was attached to the jump car. Even then it doesnt even try to turn over. Plus it seems if the lights and everything came on then there should at least be enough juice for the radio.

I`ve been on this board for quite a while, and have *never* heard of an ignition switch going bad or causing problems like this. Replace the battery with one that *you know* is good, and see what happens. Be sure to thoroughly clean all battery cable connections also.Something as simple as a bad ground could be causing this.

Probably the battery like FastBob says. Even if it appears to be a functional battery, any slight voltage differance throws the system into retard. get the battery changed out and then go from there. Good luck
