Footwells: 5-1/4" woofer Doors: 1" tweeter and 1" mid. (use component speakers for the front doors) Behind seat: 3" mid "Sub" in center behind seat: (2) 4" speakers. This is off the top of my head by the way. |

Check out Bavarian Sound Werks. They have factory plug and play replacements (supposedly better than factory) in kits . . . . before the spring I'm going to pull the plug and upgrade/replace the highs and mids . . . I'm also going to spring for the sub enclosure.

yea, I'll check bavarian. Though in my last car, polk audio speakers rocked!!!!!! I loved the bass. Not too much to rattle anything but there was good "pop"
In the center behind the seats, I have a 6" speaker cover. Behind the speaker cover is a snorkel that feeds to small speakers behind some carpet. Is it supposed to be like that? |

I'm not sure about the snorkel. I have a 2K M Roady with the Harman Kardon system. The center rear in my car had a 4" speaker mounted in a plastic enclosure (I'd hardly call it a sub) but there isn't any plumbing. ![]() Truth be told, I yanked out the center rear speaker, it was blown and I'd rather go without Bass than drive around with something that sounds like you flushed a can of quarters. Have you thought about changing out your headunit? I did, went with the JVC unit with the 4" screen (silly, but the watching a DVD in the car on a 4" screen is pretty cool). It made a healthy difference in the output but it exposed the crappy factory speakers in the foot wells. My Roady isn't a daily driver so I haven't done anything about it yet, hence the Bavarian consideration. |

BTW: the "snorkel" is stock on some of the Z3's (2-4" "subs" lol). Others had a single 6" speaker.

guys i have a problem if anyone can help, i need to change the front speakers and i don;t know what to buy, i read here that the front speakers has to be 5.25" and the door tweeters 1", the thing is that every set i find has tweeters smaller than 1". For example i want to buy this: http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/produ...?itemid=116204, the overall diameter of the tweeters is 1" but the inner diameter without the plastic case is 0.5" will this do for my Z3?

I think those will fit.
The tweeters I put in my door (MB Quart QS216 components) are 61mm (2.4") diameter overall, and the bodies (the part that fits into the mounting hole) are 54mm (2.126") diameter. They are considered to be 1.5" tweeters. It looks like the mounting holes for the Rockford Fosgates 1" that you want are 46mm in diameter, so you should be able to mount them somehow. There is certainly 19mm of depth available. There are many ways to be creative in mounting them. Most people just glue them in place with silicon adhesive. I salvaged some mounting pieces from my broken tweeters (which were dangling inside the doors) and created mounting rings from those. You may use the front hole or the back hole; you way use a Dremmel tool or file to enlarge a hole; you may use some or all of the mounting hardware that comes with the new speakers. |

They should fit just fine. I don't know anything about their performance.
The tweeter seems small (0.5"). You might get better sound from a larger tweeter, since it can usually handle more power. The woofer mounting depth is fine. My woofers are 72.8mm deep, and they fit. I installed 6.5" woofers and I had to trim the inside of the plastic kick panels; you might not have to if you're using 5.25" woofers. My installation also required a great deal of metal-cutting to accomodate the larger speakers. That's not for everybody. |

Here are some details from my audio upgrade. In the thread on mounting 6 1/2" components I have a couple of pics of how I modified the stock midrange mounts to hold the flush-mount cups for my tweeters...
Component install: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1415754 Subwoofer upgrade (unfortunately it looks as if you don't have the 6" sub): http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1373769 Main amp upgrade: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1762007 If you have separate main and sub amps like I do, Rockford-Fosgate makes a bridgeable 2-channel amp (the PBR300X2) that wasn't available when I started my upgrade. I would definitely use one of those for the sub if the Elf Audio amp dies on me. |
