1994 740il e32 transmission Slip
I have read throught all the threads and yet no answer. I have a 1994 740il it slips through the gears. Reverse is fine. It doesnt whine either. Im going to have the transmission filter and fluids changed. Had anyone had this problem and if so what was the problem and what was the cost.
What Gives?

Hey
Welcome to the forum ![]() If the auto is slipping in all gears, the chances are that it may be the torque converter on its way out. That will be major $$$ for a new one and about half that for a re-furbished one. You could be lucky and get away with a fluid and filter change... Difficult to say, but I am sure the auto specialist will be able to tell you... Rawdon |

There seems to be a slight whine when cold then fine minutes later when its warm. I havent noticed any leaks. Ill try the fluid and filter change and go from there. Im considering putting Royal Purple AT fluid in. I placed this in my Porsche and the results were beyond belief, better milage, and performance.

It sounds like yours is doing exactly what mine was doing...mine had a whine when cold and used to slip under hard acceleration. I took it to a specialist and he topped up the oil and changed the filter. Whine is gone and car no longer slips... Rawdon |

I took the car into the mechanic. The fluid levels were fine. Said it was dirty. They changed the fluid and it runs like new again.
Lesson Learned..... Change your AT fluid and filter. |

I had the same problem of the trans slipping and took it in to my BMW buds at European Auto Sports at 78758. After tearing it apart, invited me into the shop to show me the problem. There is a small bead that travels thru a plate with grooves which had worn down and showed me how that bead would not hold in place like it is supposed to so after telling him that I did not want to replace the trans he suggested we try a kit that replaces all parts in that plate and did so. It's been over five years and my 1994 740I is still running smooth. Hopefully this helps if you had not already repaired the problem.
good luck dude! |
