Angel Eye Switch DIY

Hey guys, my little switch has drawn some attention and after 3 PM's I decided to post what I was PMing to make it easier.

I'd like to thank KrisL for giving me some basic schooling in electronics and helping me figure out how to do this, I hope everyone finds it helpful.

You will need:
-a soldering iron
-a dremel
-a small sheet of lexan plastic
-a Double Pole Single Throw (DPST) Switch
-extra wire, same gauge as the trigger wire
-female connectors for the spades on the switch

Step one:

Measure the height the switch will sit above the lexan, and the thickness of the lexan. Combine the numbers, and mark that amount to cut down the interior features of your ashtray.

Then cut the lexan, I recommend scoring it and breaking it with a straight edge to get it close, and using the dremel to sand it to fit properly. Work gradually, and be patient. I chose to pressure fit it as opposed to silicone, that way I can pop it out easily to get to the back of it.

You will have to cut a hole in the bottom of the ashtray and the back of the center console to make room for the connections. I used a drill attachment to mark my corners and a cutting wheel, could have been much neater though.

Step two:

You will have to extend both trigger wires, you can run them through the free grommet on the passenger side of the engine bay.

Run them extra long up to the switch, and then cut them back as needed, so you don't make unnecessary splices. Solder and use heat shrink on the ones you do make.

Now that you have them run connect your switch to the trigger wires using your female connectors. If you choose to use an LED tap it into the ECU wire on the output side of the switch. (If you do it on the wrong wire the LED will only be on when the footwell lights are, ask me how I know.) Ground the LED to the ground for the original LED that is supposed to light the ashtray, and tape off the old positive so it can't touch anything.

Done!

I think its more for just running your angel eyes during the day. And if you wana listen to music or be in your car with the radio on stealthy you can turn the angel eyes off.

When I'm pulling up to meet someone and I care about the impression I make, my most recent example is working on a contract with an elementary school, I'll flick my switch before I get there and I go from teenager with a modded car to successful young man.

Its also very handy when working on the car or cleaning it out so they aren't constantly turning on and turning off every minute.

Very nice DIY..Can you provide some info from running it from the glove box to the console place? I'm thinking about doing this to mine in the summer.

Quit smoking. Its much easier sooner than later. Or fab it under the dash, probably not that hard.

your local autozone caries pushbutton toggle on/off accessory light switches that have an adhesive backing. They are simple to remove and no drilling required.

Good option if your use your ashtray and dont want to drill holes

+1 My angel eye switch is under my dash by the trunk switch, along with a couple of other switches . I should have put them in my ashtray though.. I like that setup.

As long as you keep it wired and not blocked with any mounts/brackets, no you won't lose function of your lighter.

Hey Slim, When your bored, can you take some pictures of behind the switch, and what/which is the trigger wire. And this LED bulb stuff etc.
If you could explain a bit in detail for the challenged ones like me, that would be great.
I am planning on doing this next weekend when I install my Ipod integration kit.

Def do it a fun and awesome modification for the interior. My next thing is incorporate some LED's for each one of my switches so I know when one is on or off because I can get caught with strobes on.

Its a complete rats nest back there, because I never got around to neatening up the wires. They are all the trigger wire. You need a DPST (Double Pole Single Throw) rocker, which will have four prongs on the back of it. Your trigger wires simply run through the switch, so on one side of the switch you have your "incoming" trigger wires, and on the other your outgoing. It took me some trial and error to get it plugged up correctly. The LED just taps the power from one of the outgoing connections and borrows a ground from the ashtray LED.

Its not too hard.
