What makes an ///M an ///M?

What makes an ///M car an ///M car? What characteristics must it show in order for it to deserve the ///M badge?

What makes an M car an M is its great driving dynamics and the grin that it puts on your face when you twist keys to turn it on.

precisely....

The Engine,
The Brakes (stopping power)
The Handling (sticks like glue on the road - flat out on corners!)
The Drive
The Seats

I could go on and on

Drive one:

for instance 335i vs M3
550i vs M5
650i vs M6

any of the top 3 comparisons should answer your question!

The brakes in M cars is a significant disappointment. Until they give them a different, more aggressive higher MOT compound, it's all for show.

The current generation ///M cars definitely have an incredible difference in the suspensions. Previous gen cars were just stiffer than stock springs and dampers.

There are significant changes to the car, to be sure, but it's mostly ///Marketing.

Are you serious with that comment............

Because turning the "KEY"was metaphorically saying actually driving the car not literally using a key for starting a car.

You guys are missing out on the best part of driving an M car! I still "turn" my key and see her come alive.

I just don't get the same feeling when I am pressing a button.

Nice video, but the problem is you won't notice all that "M-refinement" until you are on the track... till then it is worth the extra $$?

The looks of the M3 alone, to me, may just be worth the upgrade from the 335i. But!!! The 335i engine is a more high tech engine than the V8.

How has an almost 2 ton car had it's weight reduced?

Agreed BUT:
F1 designed v8 engine that rev's to 9k and weighs less than n54 is lower tech? Atleast it does not have fuel pump problems

More like 8.4k RPM, but still...

Yep, you got a point there... to be fair, the M3's engine is the world-renowned M5/M6 engine minus 2 zilinders. So basically it is the direct descendent of the engine that won World Engine of the Year 3 times in a row. Sure, it seems like complaining because one got a no. 2 engine and not a no. 1 engine (the twin turbo).

Does anybody who own an M3 care about mileage?

Because if low tech were better we would all still be using horses and carts.

Care to explain, how?

And do you have any facts to base this assumption on?
