Greetings fellow Bimmer enthusiasts.
I have a 2001 330i with 208,000 miles on it and do most of my own repairs. The problem I currently have occurs shortly after the engine warms up, the engine losses some power and the engine fan noise increases with increased RPMs. Working through the dealer read fault codes, I have replaced the engine thermostat and the engine coolant sensor (ECT), but it did not solve this problem.

The next problem occurs at speeds of 30-80 MPH, with the throttle at a constant position, the engine decreases about 500 rpm for about 5 seconds and then returns to normal for another 5 seconds. this continues as long as the throttle is at the same position and the engine is under a constant load.

Sure appreciate any helpful suggestions on how to search for resolutions to these problems or solutions.

Best Regards,
Kenneth R.

E46 Repairs

1. Fan noise & power loss problem resolved with replacement of viscous Fan Clutch.
2. Ocilating drop in RPM at constant speed, severity reduced with replacement of VANOS Solenoid. Suspect need to replace VANOS seals with Beisan seal repair kit.
3. Control Arm Ball Joint separation, heated knuckle just above ball joint for 3-4 minutes, then used a 15/16" ball joint pickle fork and repeated blows with a 5 lbs sledge hammer. Thank you hexy27 and ahull for sharing your solutions.
