Display MP3/Folder names on 05 CD player?

Hi,

I tired to burn some MP3 songs in a data CD and play it in my CD player. However, it only showed 'TR01-001' while the TR01 is the no. of folder and the 001 is the track. Does anyone got any luck to display the names of the folder or even the names of the MP3 on the display? It is a little hassel to go through 200+ songs in a CD without knowing the names.

Thanks in advance!

Ah, yes. For this you need a computer in your trunk (or at least some serious homebuilt hardware). The way things are displayed on the screen is through I-bus, so you need something that reads your ID3v2 tags and folder and outputs them to the bus in a nice way so they scroll across the screen.

If you're not a serious electronics person (i.e. if you are unsure how one would go about doing this already), you're probably out of luck. Try asking some guys on the Hack the I-bus yahoo group.

Alternatively, you could just get an iPod and an Ice>Link

Zoofa,

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I need to do a lot of work in order to get the names on the display. I am not quite sure why the after market MP3/CD player can read the folder/track names while the one from BMW cannot.

Well basically the BMW Business CD has about a 9 character display IIRC.....so there's not a whole lot worth displaying on there. Aftermarket guys usually have much longer displays with more characters of a smaller size, so it's practical there. If you're desperate to have track names and you don't mind altering the OEM look of your stereo, there are adapters so that you can replace it with an aftermarket head unit. Check out the Audio forum:

Some folks have posted pictures in a few different articles, so you can check it out and think about your options.....

Thanks again Zoofa. I guess I am out of luck here then since I do not want to ruin the interior look.

I'm currently doing some beta testing of a unit that enables you to do this without going to the trouble of installing a full car PC or losing the OEM look of your car. The unit connects up the standard BMW CD Changer input in the boot (sorry, trunk) to an Alpine CHA-S634 CD Changer. It's simply plug and play, three connectors, one to the CD Changer, one to the BMW Audio and one to the BMW IBus for control, it literally takes less than 5 mins to do the lot.

Here's a sample screen shot from my Nav System, it also works in a more limited way with the standard single line head units, see http://www.intravention.co.uk/www/ for more potos and info.

Well none of that is really known at the moment!!!

It will depend a lot on the number of units that are made in a batch, if you are seriously interested then post a message on the site given above. Currently the price to make it is about £100 UK, all the boards are hand made and it's just for beta testers right now. Hopefully this will be quite a bit less when/if it is made in larger quantities. The hardware is in a pretty good state, the software still has 'issues' which many people would not be happy with. But none of the problems are insurmountable, hopefully!

By the way, you are lucky that your CD player plays MP3's at all, that was only added for cars built from September '04. Mine was built in August '04 and it does not play MP3's.

I found the solution to this problem. Thanks to Eric Wedel (a colleague of mine) who suggested to remove the "ID3" tags from my MP3 songs. So that's what I did and that solved my problem.

Follow this link and that should do it:

Good luck.

Just to clarify. You are talking about this allowing a 2008 to display the artist information, not an E46, correct?

I am really interested in doing the same for the business cd in my 05 e46, could you elaborate on the process to get track names to appear for MP3 CD?
