E38 Steering wheel shake

When driving on highway at speeds in excess of 40mph I get a pretty violent shake or jolt when going over minor bumps...like a bushing is done. It's not the shimmy between 45 - 55mph, I already had that and replaced my traction struts. Any insight to what could be causing this..? I know for a fact that my steering wheel shouldnt shake like this over bumps at medium speeds because I was driving my buddy's 528i and his steering wheel didnt jolt or shake at all when I went over the same highway bumps...Any help would be great as I would like to know what to look for before I crawl under the car.

Thanks
James

James, Check the tie rod ends as well as the tie rod main assembly.

Did you check the tire balancers? Had the same problem when going 50MPH, if your running stock rims they are thps little metal peices on the tire thiers one on each tire.

havent checked tire balance but i am probably due for a tire rotation, should do that and bring it in for a balance.

mine had this problem. it was tire ballance, still does it from time to time when the tires are cold. i noticed that the tire shop does not take the time to properly ballance the wheels to perfection and this will be the case with such wide wheels. when i used to ballance tires, taking your time was all the difference. placement of weights are key. only getting them sort of in the right place causes this from what i've found. they need to be perfectly placed.

I would lift up the front end and shake each tire up/down and left/right to see if there was any play in the suspension pieces. If there was, I would tell someone else to shake the wheels and I would go under the car to see which pieces had play.

Right now, I'm thinking that it may be the strut mounts in your car that are bad, but I'm not sure. You won't be able to detect a bad strut mount by shaking the front tires.
