How can you tell?

If your issue is only second gear, why do you think it's a clutch? Sounds like a bad syncro to me.

I would suggest having someone who knows a lot more than you about cars check it out before spending any money....

I have the funny 2nd gear issue.
It's hard to engage 2nd, it feels rubbery and resists going in, especially when it's cold.
One time it actually popped out of gear when I accelerated hard.
That's how I can tell.

1. if your car is "Popping" out of gear occasionally it's most likely the rubber transmission or clutch "bushings" in there. I had mine done under warranty a few years ago. I can go look up the part and description if needed.

2. different tranny fluid will react differently, my car with swepco 201 in it doesn't shift worth a shyte till it's warm, but afterwards like butter.

That's probably not a clutch.

Sounds more like a worn synchro problem than a clutch problem....second-gear synchros take the most beating out of all of them....

Those symptome are classic for a worn synchro. And usually it holds in gear on accel, but pops out on hard DECEL. Floor it in second, then lift off rapidly.

I agree with Bob, get someone elses opinion before you start throwing parts at it.

Well what i was talking to a shop and they said something about bleeding a little bit of fluid out and trying that... Are they somewhat adjustable? It is only second gear even if you touch that clutch a little bit while its in second it will revup....

You're not making any sense to me.
Engine will rev up if you touch the clutch but not the gas pedal?

Do you mean the revs travel up very quickly in 2nd gear, like its slipping and the car is not going anywhere(foot completely of the clutch pedal). Did the shop guy drive the car? You gotta explain this a little better... or go to the stealer

It may help you to read this thread because I am currently in the process of replacing my clutch. I didn't have really any slipping but the clutch petal was wobbly when in use. When I took the clutch out it was the release/throwout bearing>(trashed!) Other option is you can just drive it till it goes bad but that may leave you without the car for a few days to weeks. Good luck.
