Help With E Brake Adjustment

I have found a couple of threads, 1 with some apparently very good photos, and the mostly useless factory instructions. However, I am stymied with how to back off the spring auto-adjuster. Car is a 2007 M Coupe. The photo I saw looked as though the adjuster is behind the lever. On mine, it is below the lever down in a slot. When I release the brake, which I have to do to then back off the tensioner, the handle comes down right above the spring. There is almost no room to see, much less push back the end of the spring. I can get a big screwdriver against it, but at about a 45 degree angle, and can't get enough leverage to make the spring budge. Please tell me what I am missing.

Thanks.

Yah, that is the thread I was looking at. Seeing it with a new eye, a few fewer layers of sweat, and some patience, it looks like he not only removed the boot around the e brake handle, but the forward part of the console up to the shifter. It also looks like, in the photo that shows the spring, the handle was puled up when he is forcing the spring back. Maybe I need to learn how to disassemble the forward part of the console.
