Can I replace the battery in my key?

I asked a bmw tech if I could replace the battery in my key and he said it's not possible. He says I need a new key at $250?!? That simply can't be...I know bmw likes money but this sounds like Apple level stuff. I have only the one key so I'm wary of cracking open the key to look at the battery. I have to be within 5 feet of the car to open it with the button now.

Is there a cheaper way to buy a spare key than the dealer?

I have replaced several keys for my bmw's and they are around $150 at my local dealer. $250 sounds alittle high.

Don't try to change the battery without first following to good advice at the link provided. I got a key when I bought my Z4 that did absolutely nothing except work in the ignition. I flowed the direction to re-program the key and it now works perfectly.
