Exclamation X5 Transmission failsafe program EGS Module problems

I have an 01 x5 4.4i and just recently the transmission fail safe light came on. When this happens the transmission is usually warm. If I move it into triptronic nothing happens and it feels like it is 4th gear. The speedo stops working as well. I took it to a bmw shop and 3 days later they said the EGS control module needs to be replaced as well as the ABS control module. This is 2300 dollars!. Has anyone had this happen to them before and if so is there recommended fix correct? Secondly are these modules something I can replace myself? I am somewhat handy at working on older cars but if this is way to technical or requires special tools then I may not be able to do it.

Any help is appreciated!

At that mileage, I'm surprised you don't need to replace the entire gearbox yet. Not a technical expert so I can't say whether the fix is correct or not, but you should get used to some hefty repair bills.

evd19us,
In your case, I think all you need is a new battery. Sometimes, a low battery voltage could cause a trans failsafe error. Since the battery is already dead, mind as well try swapping out the battery first to see if it fixed your transmission problem as well.

BTW...how long since you last replaced your battery? I would normally replace mine every 5 years or so just as preventative maintenance.

The battery light is a sign of a non-working alternator. If this is the case, your battery would soon die again.

I went to the dealer and i paid $280 to them to tell me the my alternator is bad. And to fix a will cost $1800 . So i took their paper to my mechanic and paid only $350 total

What are you even talking about? I have an X5 with 115K on it & thank g-d it runs fine. I have a friend with an X5 at 210k and it runs fine as well, never replaced engine but did have to replace transmission at 170k.

It all depends on how you maintain the car, BMWs are built to last.

That is very odd. The only time I've ever seen the CHECK ENGINE, DSC, and ABS lights all being ON at the same time is right after a battery replacement. If the DSC module is functioning properly, a full lock to lock turn of the steering wheel should put out all three aforementioned lights.

THEY WERE ALL ON BEFORE I REPLACED THE BATTERY . BUT WHEN I REPLACED ONLY THE BATTERY AND NOT THE ALTERNATOR IT DROVE PERFECT AFTER I FIX THE ALTERNATOR WHEN BACK TO Transmission failsafe program.

That is exactly what is wrong with mine. BMW wanted to replace the transmission control module and the ABS control module. I took it to a local shop and once they unplugged the ABS module all the lights cleared but the ABS light and the car drove normal again. Instead of paying 1800 I sent the ABS control module off to be fixed for $105. When I got it back they said a component was causing the system to short out but they claimed to fix it. Unfortunatley the car still cant talk to the ABS module so I will send it back again under warranty. If that doesn't do it I will need to replace the part which is 1200 plus programming. My advice to you is to unplug the ABS control module it is right behind the driver headlight. If your car drives fine then you know you need to either try and have it fixed or replace it. I am traveling for a month so I will try to work on the car again when it and I are back in the same state.

Mine just happened after an oil change. I turned it off--waited for a minute and it was back to normal. Mine has a speed limit setting. It was set to 60 mph and i was kind a speeding when it happen. i change the speed limit of my car to 80 mph---- and so far it's good. Idk if i have to go back to the dealership. I'm broke.

Not their automatic transmissions.

Engines, yes. Manual transmissions, yes. But the automatics are a known weak spot on BMWs.

I swear a poltergeist just hexed my car. Well the getting the ABS module fixed didn't work so there went 1300 bucks now the abs lights are good and so is the speedo.. The radiator also was cracked and slowly leaking so I replaced that too. The front control arms needed to be replaced yay. So here I am having fixed all of that thinking the car should be good for awhile and now the windshield fluid wont spray up front and the pump is quite hot when I touch it, the airbag light is on and I am told I need to replace the seatbelt and even more perplexing the daytime driving lights no longer come on yet I have no warning signals for this.........

Another of typical BMW weakness. Mike Miller, the tech editor of Roundel magazine, recommends a radiator replacement at 100,000 miles as a preventative measure. The water pumps of BMWs are also a weak spot.

Sadly this has been the second radiator replacement. I can't figure out the daytime running lights not working. I start the car and it reads check the fog lights but those are good and it has always said that. I replaced the turn signal and now the daytime running lights don't work but the high beams do.........

My battery went dead and re-charging didn't work anymore. So I had it replaced and on my way home I got the same error message "TRANSMISSION FAILED SAFE MODE" As with other users on this post it's on 4th gear and triptronic didn't work. It was fine after I shut the car off and restarted it. So it seems to be consistent with other users who had battery issues. Has something to do with batteries although I'm not sure what it is. I'll keep my watch for the next few weeks and post any further observation.
