I couldn't convince the wife to wait anymore for the new X3, so I reluctantly ordered a Q5. Waiting on delivery now. Was sufficiently impressed at the Audi driving event, so maybe the car will exceed my expectations.

All I want is an X3 as lovely as my e90. Maybe I'll order one for myself if it lives up to the hype in my head. Is it wrong to own 2 SAVs?

I really wish Audi used their new 3.0L supercharged engine in the Q5 rather than the 3.2L engine. You know as soon as the new X3 comes up, they are going to upgrade the engine - why not just do it now

Was only 1 paragraph blurb.

Quoted from Roundel....
"Next-gen X3 rushed to production:
To compete with the new audi Q5 and other small SUV's, BMW has pushed up the production of the next-generation X3 to later this year, with vehicles arriving at dealers in the first quarter of 2010. The decision accelerates the introduction of the new X3 by nearly one year, and is indicative of the brutal competition in this market segment."

I will guarantee that it won't be available with a manual, that's why I ordered me a 335i. I was willing to hold out, but as soon as the X1 wasn't available with one, I knew there was no chance of the X3 having one.

So if details are going to be released in December, when can one reasonably expect to get into one? May?

May or June. Assuming they pull it all together and get the car ready for a Spring release. I think they will. They need to get it out to compete with Merc's new GLK.

last time I looked the current X3 came in a close 2nd compared to the newer small SUVs --from C&D earlier this year. So IMHO it would seem to be a great time to get a nice example of the first gen X3 -- complete with this thing we call a manual transmission, and a really nice one at that -- as it nears its final production run at Magna Steyr where all the kinks have been worked out and they make things the old fashioned, very Germanic way. Rather than getting in on the new-fangled, highly electronic, American-made (sorry just not as good in my book), first/second year production run of the next gen X3 -- which will no-doubt have dozens of gremlins and teething problems. Just a different take on the whole thing...to each his/her own.

It'll be unfortunate if the new X3 doesn't offer manual, but that's the world we live in today. At least one can still get a properly set up RWD BMW with manual and some cargo room, 328iT, but who knows, BMW may not even offer wagons in the future in order to favor the AWD SAVs.

That aside, Audi Q5 is a nice looking and well packaged vehicle. X3 looks so out dated inside and out, despite how it drives.

Opinions are just opinions and no ones is wrong but I don't agree. The old X5 looked outdated. To me the X3 looks very much like the new X5 (which looks very good). From a distance I have trouble telling them apart. As for the interior I like the X3's better than I like my daughters E90 328i. The way the X3 center console flows up and into the dash is a much better look than the straight across dash she has. I also like my key and the fact that I don't have all the service "layers" and car settings in the computer. In my opinion if the X3 had 6FL ipod integration it would be absolutely perfect.

But then I come from the 6 volt car battery, pre halogen, generator, voltage regulator, tubed radio generation so I'm easier to please.

Brutal competition?

What about the problems stemming from the current crop of X3's the latest production of which stretched at least into September per the dealer. Good God, how stupid are the buyers of this car.

good one KJ. G-D PP can you contribute anything other than how bad the car is and how stupid we all are? You are the quintessential eccentric relative in the corner who keeps muttering the same things over and over again. You have a lovely thread below where you can post to your hearts content.

Having said that -- I like the look of the new X3. But it is an absolute non-starter for me if it doesnt have a MT. After just under a year with my MT X3, I really wouldnt consider driving one with an AT for any length of time. And I also love the interior of my car. When I get a loaner from the dealer and its an 09 328, I marvel at how the general design is exactly the same and how much I like my "old" E46 - based design. I also marvel over the indecisive AT in the 3-series. I am sure its the same unit which causes the problems in the X3. ANd its not unlike the behavior which my old audi allroads exhibited. Throttle tip in lag, slow-down/start up throttle lag. It was all there. Sucked then and sucks now. Manual transmission is the cure.

BMW’s second generation X3 is getting ready for its official launch at the Detroit Motor Show next January. With a new bodystyle and increased overall dimensions, the redesign X3 is looking to regain its supremacy in the premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle segment. Before we take a look at the new rendering by Auto Motor und Sport, let’s recap some of the things we learned about the new 2011 BMW X3.

According to unofficial numbers, the second generation X3 will have similar proportions as the first X5 SAV allowing the new BMW X1 to position itself as the entry level BMW SAV.

The “kicked-up” window line that first saw the daylight in the X3 will be again evident and it will be seen as an X3 characteristic, a design element that will be associated with the model. It will also have will have a roof line slightly lower than the current mode, giving the car a sportier look.

The interior design receives a much needed upgrade as well and according to sources close to BMW, the new design is a step up from the current model and it will be similar to the one in the new X1. As seen in some of the previous spy photos, the AC control buttons resembles the one seen in the E9x 3 Series models, another indication that many interior elements are being used across the line-up.

To successfully compete in its market, the new 2011 BMW X3 is rumored to feature some of the gadgets seen in higher-end models: Night Vision System, Adaptive Headlights, Head-Up Display and seats with ventilation.

The six cylinder engines missing from the X1 line-up, will find their way into the new X3. Various turbocharged gasoline and petrol powerplants will be available, based on the market where the vehicle will be sold. Later after the launch, BMW plans to offer an ActiveHybrid X3 which will use a mid-line diesel powerplant.

The future X3 is moving its production from the Magna factories in Graz, Austria, to the U.S soil at the Spartanburg plant.

2011 BMW X3 models will arrive at U.S. dealerships in the second half of next year and it will be slotted between the X1 and the 3 Series, with the base price set accordingly

For now, I like the new X3 a lot more then the X1 from what I see on pics, but man, the old X5 is a big SAV, I really hope the new X3 is not that big, I LOVE the actual size of the X3

I would say that the X1 will be smaller than the current X3 and the new X3 will be a little bigger but smaller than the old X5. Either way, no ED = no X3 for me

My question will be which X series will be eliminated first? The X6 if we are lucky.

Then they can make an M class X3.

I looked at the M class X5 which is now the same price point as the x6 and not as ugly.

I can't see supporting 4 classes where they cross into each others demographics.
