Cool 1996 328i misfire cyl #4 Please help

Well I'm going crazy. My 328i has a check engine light telling me Cyl 4 is misfiring. If I shut the car off and wait 10 min the miss will go away. I've swapped coils with no luck. I've swapped injectors with no luck. Seems when I clear the code the or shut the car off the miss goes away. Am I right thinking that the computer is bad? any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Obd-II requires you clear the code with scanner. I would inspect the plug and do a compression check.

My '98 328i is doing virtually the same thing but on cyl #6. I've tried swapping coils/injectors also and still no luck. I even replaced the intake manifold gasket...same problem. Next step is to replace all the plugs although I really suspect something more complicated like a bad connection at the DME possibly. The fact that it's intermittent and goes away after turning the car off for awhile make it difficult to troubleshoot.

Changing the plugs should have been the first thing you did. Replace them with NGK BKR6EK plugs, clear your fault code, and report back.

Misfire solved

I finally tracked my misfire down to the coil pack harness connector (on the passenger side). Wiggling the connector caused the problem again. When I separated the connector, the outer ring wouldn't twist and just pulled straight up. Once off I still couldn't get the outer ring to twist. I found another harness on eBay and once installed correctly, my misfire went away. I'm guessing the previous owner must have had the connector off at one point and never got it seated correctly. Once again it runs like a champ.

I am having a very similar problem. I R&R spark plugs and #4 coil pack that diagnosed as throwing a misfire. Car always has a very rough idle at cold start (overnight). To my mind the harness you refer to is comprised of 1. a bail and a female connector. Unfortunately the harness you refer to is not shown via www.realoem.com?

This about covers it. Not sure what might be the issue.

Thanks

Hi Marcus;

Did you try to just swap the missing cylinder's coil pack with one on another cylinder to see if the issue moves cylinder's?

Marcus,
Here's a picture of the connector. Couldn't hurt to make sure all the pins are clean and straight and reseat the connector.
