Hc2003 Coupe Group Photo ?

Last year the coupes got together in Michelins lot for a coupe photo.

Why don't we get the panoramic camera guy to shoot us the day the big group does the photo?

He would only have to run a small radius to get us all.

Its really hard to get a good shot with a regular camera.

Anyone interested?

If they will let us, I'm certainly in. I thought someone tried to set this up last year but we got denied?

I'm sure you'd stand a better chance if you contact the photographer now and don't spring it on him that Saturday morning.

As far as he's concerned, it just means more money...

Jake Spruill looked into it last year but kind of at the last minute. The photographer said no because he evidently caught some grief the year before for damage to the grassy area to the side of the Zentrum. Rain + cars + photo stand = ruts! It pretty much would have to be done in an area separate from the main photo because a lot of the roadsters don't move after the main panoramic.

With the little I've toyed with it, I'd had reasonable luck stitching together multiple shots to make a panoramic with the Canon EOS-10D. I'll be reeling off truckloads of shots anyway (planning to bring a pair of 2G CF cards with me and filling them each day), and I'll have my tripod with me (and I'll be wishing I had a much lighter one :-)). No EF fisheye lens at the moment, though I suppose I could pick one up before the trip. Probably not needed for the Coupes since you guys are so rare... the wide angle lens is probably sufficient if I don't have to stand on top of you to get a shot. Heck, we could probably get a good shot in one of the hotel parking lots, or the local mall parking lot (the latter I'm pretty certain about, when I was in Greenville the mall's lot had more than enough space to get good shots of 30 cars even though the mall was busy). Break of dawn Sunday morning?

The only advantage to one of us taking the shots is that we don't have to pay the photographer or get them in trouble, and it could be fairly spontaneous. The disadvantage is that I'm not a pro and I have to run the stitching program to put together a panaromic shot. Obviously I don't want to spend hours getting the right shot, but if it takes half an hour to get it, and the lighting conditions are good, I'm willing. I'd also be happy to mail 19"x13" prints to folks that want them ($2 each plus postage, that's about the cost of the Canon Photo Pro paper in this size). Or 8x10s or 4x6s (cheaper). I only have a Canon S9000 printer, but it's new and so far it has produced pretty spectacular prints (ask Randy for a more objective judgement, he got a couple of prints from me last week of Sue and himself at autocross). Of course, all the photos will be on my web site after HC (some probably during HC, if I can get decent connectivity from a hotel room or the Marriott parking lot), for those who'd rather just download the 3072x2048 JPEGs and print themselves, take to the photo lab, put on their web site, use as desktop wallpaper, whatever. There won't be any restrictions on use other than insisting no one charges anyone for them.

Works for me. I assume I can get good shots facing anywere but west so I don't have to contend with the still-unfamiliar-feeling exposure metering on the 10D? I'm only bringing one flash (and no mount, just the camera hotshoe), so I'd need to shoot a good deal before sunset (8PM in Greenville at the end of August). At what time was last year's shot taken? Can we all get there before 7? I've never been to HC so I have no idea what the real schedule looks like...

I'm willing to burn a few CDs containing the JPEGs if folks want them before they leave, but I'm not willing to stay up all night Saturday babysitting the laptop to make dozens of them :-), and I won't be stitching together any panoramics 'til I'm back home with a desktop machine (bigger monitor).

With all due respect to DWM, I say you guys all chip in and go with the professional. Please, take my advice...I work 5 days a week with a commercial photographer...

It's just the details and the eye for the shot that can't really be duplicated in the same conditions by an amateur, even a good one. You have to be able to work under time constraints, light constraints, weather constraints, and when you're organizing a photograph of this magnitude you're also dealing with location constraints, and just a bunch of people. Lots of people alone are not conducive to good, technically sound photographs.

That said, I would be very interested in seeing what DWM produces, but for the guaranteed best shot I would pay the professional, as well.

Just my two cents gentlemen.

I agree too, and no offense taken. My offer stands either way; I'd like to have the pictures myself and I've a friend in town with an S54 M coupe who'd probably enjoy the pictures. It costs me nothing but a little time. I offered because the hard part is getting you guys all in one spot at the same time, and it'd be a real shame if you could all get together of your own accord but the photographer couldn't make it. And yeah, I didn't volunteer to corral everyone nor bring a ton of photo gear with me (the roadster has less usable storage space than the coupe :-)), only what I already intended to bring (which normally wouldn't include the flash, but I'd like to get a few decent shots at Nash Bash so it'll be with me if I need it for that).

I'm also buying 50 tickets for a chance to have a coupe up front with the roadster pic.

Ok so far it looks like:

1. we have some coupers who will take and share some shots at our 2nd annual michelin parking lot meeting.

2. we should try to get the panoramic camera guy set up early. we can let him decide where and when.

does anyone have the photographers name and phone number. If you do, could you post it here?

Getting a legitimate Coupe-only photograph will be highly coveted IMO. God forbid I ever sold my car, but think how that picture will help sell my baby. Better than any mint condition window sticker!

Hey guys,

I know the panoramic photographer from 02-02-02 and left him a message about our desire for a coupe only photo at Homecoming this year. Basically, it's always based on how many he thinks he can sell. But, since he's already going to be there anyway, the cost basis would really be based on how many of us buy one. I can't imagine any of us would NOT WANT AT LEAST ONE, right?

I contacted the photographer. He needs a count of how many coupes will attend. I'm sure that would help him plan where to shoot.

Does anyone know Ken Sparks enough to get a count how many coupes will attend this year?
