From the CarFax URL he posted, I made an educated guess and found THIS- http://beta.kpix.com/xtra/focus/shopping/used_cars.html

Click on the CarFax link from there and it should work.

The link doesn't work...

I was actually interested in checking out a car to see how good Carfax is. I keep forgetting to bring the VIN in with me to work. I was hoping this link (ed.) would have worked!

Bummer. Still not working for me.
If anyone doesn't have a car they want to check themselves, here's what I wanted to check: http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...or=&cardist=24

Ahhh.... Estoril with M Contours.

You wouldn't be the first guy to dump an E46 330 for an E36 M3 you know.

What error is that other link giving you? It really should work.

I didn't look at the locations, only the far right column of "events".

What caught my eye was how the car ended up in Quebec...

I wonder if the new owner has any idea of the enxtent of the damages that earned that truck a salvage title.

I was just using this vehicle as a test to see how good Carfax is. I have no intentions of ever going near that vehicle again-- I still have nightmares about it!

Okay, the link worked in a different browser. Odd.

Yep, I'd be in good company. And yeah, I finally drove an E36 last week. Oops. I didn't drive it much, but enough to know.

This report looks odd too:

That one seems odd...

Did the Autotrader add mention an accident? I looked at it a few minutes ago, and I don't recall that.

You should get one of those paint thickness meters if you go look at it and see if you can find any paintwork. As it stands, I'd pass on it.

It did mention the accident. In 2002 with only ~1800 miles on it. From a 1998 car. And now it has 38k miles. Another run away me thinks. Although it's less than 50 miles from me.

As someone who bought a CPO'd car that should not have been CPO'd because of the nature of accient I later learned it had been in, I can say that it's not that big of a deal if you plan on keeping the car. A body shop guy I talked to said that a huge percentage of M3s have been stuffed at one time of another. If the car was fixed right, who cares. I mean, if you were to rear-end someone in your car tomorrow, you'd get the car fixed and you wouldn't think to dump it. But now it's technically been in an accident. I think too much is made of the accident issue and not enough attention is paid to how well the car was or was not maintained.

Good point. I'm just curious at the fact that the car had less than 2000 miles in its first four years. But I guess as long as it feels tight, drives well, and checks out mechanically that's all that really matters. Maybe I'll go take a look. Even though there is nothing wrong with my car, and people think I'm nuts already.
