Tasteful or not?

So last night I was driving downtown to have dinner and this M5(circa 2001) was following me. We exit at the same street and it pulls up next to me. I look over and it has a European license plate visible under the Oregon plate. Just as I am about to comment at how stupid it looks, my girlfriend says "I love the German plate under the Oregon plate..." I was disgusted. I fought off the urge to pull over and kick her out of the car and instead thought I would poll the bimmerfest folks. So which is it? Tacky or tasteful?

I mean, is it really necessary to "prove" to others that you traveled to Munich to pick up your car for a 7% discount?

Funny, I saw a Volvo parked in front of my building withe same set up (Sweedish plates, of course). Not sure why anyone would do this unless the euro plates are legit. Can't see many people having a car shipped back and forth, necessitating two plates, but who knows.

He could have just bought one of those german plates over the web?

In PA we don't need front license plates and I was thinking of getting a custom one (it's ugly to leave it bare, and the dealer plate...well i'll pass on that). I was thinking of making this at a place (online that makes custom plates). The link should take you to my profile. What do you guys think?

http://www.buildasign.com/PowerDesig...dit=1&track=pd

For those who do not want to click the link.

License Plate
Grey background (color pallettes are limited)
BMW logo centered in the middle
The letters "ORLY?" overlayed on top

My two coworkers mocked me and says it ruins the luxary elegance of the car...I was thinking it would more pronounce the fun sportiness of the car (when I am in it I think fast more then elegance).

Thoughts?

P.S. It's never wrong to kick your g/f out of the car. After I got mine my g/f started helping me look for a trophy g/f

Take advantage of the fact that your state doesn't require a front plate and leave it off. Many risk tickets for the same reason in other states.

ORLY is only classy if you got YARLY on the back plate. In that case I'd love it.

Overall I'm not a big fan of euro plates in the usa, even worse if you have both on.

I think it is stupid looking. If you do ED, keep the plate, even frame it, and pass it on if you ever sell the car. It's a cool keepsake, but it looks dumb to drive around with it

I'm sure other countries feel the same way towards us. Americans think they're the centre of the world. Plus, they cannot spell properly either.

Back on topic: Choose ONE plate or another. Not both.

On an unrelated note, did they even allow ED on the E39 M5?

With spelling like that.... Every country thinks they are hot stuff. The reason the US stands out so much is it is considered the most powerful country in the world. Number 1 always get's a bulls-eye. A major bank in the US, First Union, would get slammed left and right. They eventually changed their name to Wachovia. Being number 1 in anything has a downside- people try and knock you down.

Ohhh vanity plate. Great idea.

So the overall group thinks I should just leave the spot blank?

I am pretty sure most people go to Munich to pick up their cars for other reasons than the discount. Its nice to have, but I would have done it with a discount or not, and I am sure many from the ED forum would say the same.

On the other hand, I dont think it looks nice to have your European license plate underneath your state one. However, I would love to put mine on my front bumper, but I am too afraid someone would steal it since I dont want to drill holes in my front bumper to mount it.

Agree. That seems reasonable, just don't understand the one plate covering the other.

In the bar.

Your ED plate belongs in your bar, not on your car.

I think it's a bit pretentious, but I can also see that some folks just had a great time with the ED, and it's a part of their memories just as is the car, so they want it on there. At least it's still somewhat visible, yet more secure and less likely to be lost, if it's under the other one . . . although my mental image of that setup is not sophisticated, but instead about as attractive as an amusement park bumper sticker.

Tacky! Just too much junk there. I just got my US plate with the same numbers as my ED plate. Although I did drive around with my ED plates on the car for almost a month after I got it back while I was waiting for my US plates to come in. I had the paper in the window though like the DMV said I had to do. I was a little curious to see how that conversation was going to go if I got pulled over. Not really curious. Just a little...

It looks stupid to have an ED plate under another plate. Stupid.
The front of the car looks best without a plate if not required in your state.
Mount the Ed plate on your garage wall in front of your ED car.
Don't buy a fakey ED plate- that's douche and meaningless.

When I lived in Indiana (no front plate), I rocked my parents old German plate on the front. My wife had a plate holder on her front bumper of her Volvo and it had holes in the bumper where it was attached, so I got her a Swedish plate that said 8-67 5309. Only a few people got that, most just noticed the cool euro plate.

I thought it looked cool and I saw a few others "enthusiast" drivers out there with euro plates.

Now we are in NY, so no more Euro plate and no I haven't thought of mounting them with a NY front plate.

WHO here speaks "american?!"

I thought this mentality went away with the old administration.

I know a joke about this, which is interesting in that it has two different punchlines. The first is most often used in North America, but sometimes used in Europe; the second is mostly used in Europe.

The joke is in the form of a riddle:
Q: If someone who speaks three languages is called trilingual, and someone who speaks two languages is called bilingual, then what do you call someone who speaks one language?

A1: American.

A2: French.
