After using BMW SUPER POWER Synthetic 5W-40 LL98 for many years, a few months back I swamp to Castrol Syntec 5W-40 LL98 and I love it!!! Both of these oils are for euro version cars; my car is a German version.
Castrol has also a Syntec 5W-40 for USA version BMWs
I feel more power, as well as the engine became much more silent from start……
Keep in mind that Castrol is responsible of making the OEM oils for BMW under BMW brand name.
Cheers

So im scared to find the answer to this question. I bought my car from guy and its about due for an oil change. theres over 250k on the odo. I know that once you go synthetic you dont wanna go back cuz of various reasons. However i dunno if the car has synthetic or dino in it now... is there an easy way to tell? The last place he had the oil done was Valvoline. if they used synthetic will it be called out in some way on the little windshield sticker?

usually they check the little box in the corner marked "synth"

you can switch back and forth. All that stuff they say is mostly hype, synthetic has detergents in it that will break down conventional oil, but if you run a synth blend you'd be fine. If you go full synth you can go back to dino oil by going with a synth blend in between. I used to do that on cars at the $tealership. it's safe.

First thing is first.

Whenever you buy a new car change all the fluids!

Secondly, switching to synthetic will NOT harm your car.

I didnt mean switching to synth. i meant switching back to dino if full synth was already in there.

I'm thinkin safest would be a synth blend. Thx for the tip.

Also I'm going to change the other fluids (coolant) when its a little less balls-ass cold outside considering i dont have a garage big enough to work in.

Hmm my vanos was noisy with castrol. Then the timing chain snapped

The S52's vanos is a little noisey, too. I'm thinking it's time to try a new oil. I've been using GTX high mileage.

I'm due for an oil change in the next 4-500 miles, and I'm considering trying Rotella T-6 5W40. Trying to do some reading on it ahead of time...

You won't find much except for speculation,

I beat my engine to death every day and the rotella has been the most quiet

Cheap and higher flash point than anything you can buy off the shelf, its on sale for 20 bucks for a jug of 4 quarts

Yeah, I hate (HATE!) reading about oil, since everyone thinks what they use is the best. Anyway, where did you find it on sale?

Lol Ze I agree its funny everyone has the best oil. I've used 0-40 mobil 1 many times and the past 3 oil changes I've used penzoil ultra 5-40 and haven't noticed a difference. I feel as if its a sythetic and changed around every 3 you really can't go wrong :/
