E39 (1997 - 2003)

Mein Auto: 1999 BMW 528I
White smoke coming from under hood

While the car (1999 528i) was running, I smelled something burning from under the hood. I saw wisps of smoke coming from the components shown in the photo below.

Can someone tell me what this part is and how to fix the problem?

That's an oxygen sensor. You shouldn't have any smoke coming from it because it should be screwed down tightly enough where no exhaust gas escapes. Now as for your white smoke problem, that could be a few things.

Mein Auto: 540i M , 560SEL
Check the brake lines behind the heat shield coming out of the ABS/DSC module. The lines on my car ruptured there causing white smoke to escape from that area of the engine bay.

Check the two rubber hoses located just beyond where your blue arrow stops.

Could it be leaking oil? Valve cover gasket? I'm having the same thing...seems like burning oil to me.

How's your break/clutch pedal feel?

Check the two rubber hoses located just beyond where your blue arrow stops.

Possible if the gaskets are bad enough.
