transmission rebuild/replace, cost/advice!

So i have recently purchased a 2000 528i m sport at 210,000k's, without knowing the auto transmission was shot. Revs out and loses any acceleration at 60kmh, wont change up past gear 4, even manually. apart from one misfiring cylinder the car is in pristine condition, exterior and interior are perfect. beige seats with black roof lining and trims, upgraded exhaust system and a xenon headlight upgrade. The car is beautiful and for the price i got it at (around $1.2k US) I really want to keep it and restore it.

I haven't taken it in to run it over the computers and find the exact problems but, assuming it is what i have stated above what are my options. I also have my old car, a 523i 1996 which i have no intention of restoring or repairing, apart from the engine it's in bad shape and isn't as much a pleasure to drive as i'd like. I'm prepared to pull this apart and swap the trans into the 528 if thats a possibility, however i have no knowledge or DIY history with BMW's and think it'd be safest to put it in the shop.
What are the estimated costs and problems i may face if i choose to go down this route, If anyone has any experience with this kind of thing - shoot me all your knowledge and advice!!

Cheers!

We Yanks will typically opt for a low-mileage used trans, based on the value of the car. If you do not have an abundance of BMW breakers, you may need to rebuild the trans you have.

However, there may be some minor repairs that will put the trans back on the road.

Do a search here for auto trans diagnostics.
