Fuel Pump Warranty Exension

I just received a notice from BMW of an extension on the fuel pump to 10 years. Note that it comes in a plain envelope with BMW indicated only on the back of the envelope. It could easily be missed.

SUBJECT
N54 - Special Limited High Pressure Pump (HDP) Emissions Warranty of 10 Years/120,000 MilesMODEL
MY 2007/2008 E60, E61 – 535i/535xi with N54 engineMY 2007/2008 E90, E92, E93 – 335i/335xi with N54 engineMY 2008 E82, E88 – 135is with N54 engineSITUATION
BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HDP) of certain MY 2007/2008 BMW automobiles equipped with N54 engines. We estimate that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a problem. Vehicles affected may have the Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated with various low fuel pressure-related faults (e.g., 29DC, 29F1, 29F2 ) stored in the Engine Control Module (DME). Also, the affected vehicles may experience an extended engine starting time ("long crank") or reduced engine performance ("engine failsafe mode") when the High Pressure Fuel Pump malfunctions.CORRECTION
In the event that the High Pressure Fuel Pump of an MY 2007/2008 3 Series vehicle (335i/xi Sedan/Coupe/Convertible), MY 2007/2008 5 Series vehicle (535i/xi Sedan/Sports Wagon), or MY 2008 1 Series vehicle (135is Coupe/Convertible) with the N54 engine exhibits the symptoms listed above, it should be replaced with the improved part (P/N 13 51 7 592 881). For HDP diagnostic and replacing instructions, refer to SI B12 55 06 and RA 13 51 017, found in BMW TIS.PARTS INFORMATION

So they are implying that '09s have no HPFP issues? Or are they going to wait two years to add '09s to the list?

I’ll be waiting for my letter of “reassurance”. I find it a bit odd they classify an HPFP under the emissions warranty.

I did NOT get a letter in the mail, BUT I made an appointment to have my dealer retrieve my summer tires from their storage, install them and put my winter tires/rims in storage, and while I was there having the swap done, they informed me verbally that the warranty on my HPFP had been extended from 4/50k to 10/120k miles. They also printed out a piece of paper that ALMOST displayed all this info: printer printed the WIDTH of landscape mode but on paper in portrait mode so the right 1/3 of the page is missing.

It will be interesting to see how this progresses. I believe a few users have reported HPFP problems on their 09. I haven’t had any problems, but it’s early still…

After seeing this thread, I went out to my mailbox and there was the letter from BMW. Sweet! This is good to see, as I've had the hpfp replaced twice now. Glad to see that BMW is offically addressing this.

Thanks, makes sense! I used to think when they gave 10 FRUs to do a job that it must be tenths and therefore one hour. I thought they weren't giving enough time. If it is 7.5 minutes then 10 FRUs equals an hour and a quarter. Much better.
But everyone else quotes time in tenths, it would seem logical that BMW would do the same. Might be a holdover from when 7 1/2 minutes made sense but I don't know why that would be.

Me too. Got the letter today. The wife gave me a hard time. 'uh, you got a letter from BMW today'

"Was it about the high pressure fuel pump?"

'Yeah'

I go run over there and get the letter.

'You know, if I told you it was a hundred dollar check, you would just leave it there'

"Grunt" (to myself, the HPFP ain't no hundred dollar item, babe.)

Exactly. On my second HPFP repair, as I'm picking up the car my SA gives me a sheet for me to sign and says something to the effect of, "Sign here so we can charge BMW another $750."

I wonder if this applies to us up North. Wouldn't make sense that it would though, the cars cost more, get less too. Probably will we filed under the get less clause.

Got mine too. As much as I don't like playing Russian Roulette with fuel pumps I am happy to get the 10/120. Let's say I eventually need the pump replaced (the odds are against it but still higher than me winning the lottery), I will still have a guarantee, on a very critical and expensive item, good for 10 years. I'm satisfied with that.
(Note to BMW Marketing: Don't congratulate yourselves, this should not have happened in the first place.)
