When did BMW switch from carbs to fuel injection?
Thinking of buying an old car, (daily driver just got smashed). Thought about an nice old BMW, with carbs. Is there such a thing? I was planning to get a newer one for my daughter inthe summer, but I might have to get one FAST for ME....LOL Hopefully, they wouldnt cost that much, but I can spend more if necesary.
Anyway, I appreciate it if you can steer me in the right direction, as I am a greenhorn to BMW's. 2 door/4 door, no matter. Just dont know best place to look for one. Thanks guys! Joe Last edited by pippo; 03-31-2009 at 05:53 PM. |

I think the last one was the 2002, in the US. It was replaced by the 320i, so that was injected.
So, go back maybe 35 years or so........ I guess.

Yikes.....gotta go back to 1973?? Was guessing no earlier than 1976, as thats about when more/most American cars went to FI. Figure Europe waited a few more years. Ill search for the 2002...... |

Started with the 320i for electronic fuel injection, I'm pretty sure... That was 1976, in Europe, 1977 in the US..
My '67 originally came with mechanical fuel injection.... but, by the time I go it, had big dual Weber carbs..

![]() I have this car,and I think it's for sale... it has Bosch k-jetronic fuel injection, same as a Porsche 911. Hehe. It's a 1983 e21, 320is. The last year for production carburated engine is 1976, a 2002. It was a solex brand that were replaced by Webers. I hear the BMW cylinder head/cam is not fitted properly for carbs... |

You can get a weber downdraft or us a set of side drafts on the 320. the engines in the 2002s and 320s are very close. I think the only main differnce is the distributor spins the opposite way.. So if you want a carb car. Get a 320 with FI.. if it runs leave it alone. Or find a Carb kit for a 2002. It will bolt right on. You may have to fabricate some sort of throttle linkage but thats it.
Or the grey maket e21 320 six cyl cars have carbs. But the only ones I have seen are Baurs. |
