Funny how prophetic this was.

The mustang/BMW V5 pictures are great... not sure what BMW was feeling on the V5...

Not a big fan of the Fusion look, though the 2010 is definitely nicer. However, if Ford chose to offer the Mondeo over here, it might tempt my monies away from BMW.

I don't get it!!! Why does Ford build such better cars for the European market? If Ford sold that here, the Accord and Camry would be shaking in their boots.

Along the same lines, check out the new Buick LaCrosse. What do you think? Now pretend it had a BMW/Acura/Lexus/Infiniti/Audi badge instead of a Buick badge. Now what do you think? I'm sure this thing drives like a squishy boat to appeal the the target market, but I have to admit, I think it's one the nicest looking sedans ever to come out of Detroit.

I don't much like the grill or the interior layout, but the overall lines of the body are pretty sweet.

I agree. The chrome is a bit much, but I guess most Americans go like shiny stuff. Especially the Caddy market. I think the overall lines of the car are as nice or nicer than the 5-series. It's a shame the grill detracts from that.

I am not a big fan of the Ford Fusion or the Chevy Malibu for that matter but I have to acknowledge that the American manufacturers are not a clueless as they were a few year ago. Unfortunately it may be too little too late.

The new Malibu is a surprisingly good car that was completely mis-marketed by GM. It's a rebadged Opel Omega and handles incredibly well. The new Ford Fusion looks great and seems by all accounts to be a driver's car as well.

The problem was that Ford and GM didn't take advantage of their European counterparts soon enough. Ford thankfully is making cars for all markets based on Ford Europe's input and designs. GM unfortunately has to divest from Opel/Vauxhall, but since Magna will likely pick them up, GM will have the option in the future to perhaps buy them again.

That said, I want both to succeed, and think GM has some great products as of late and down the pipe. Perhaps they will finally be able to make the necessary investments into their vehicles instead of into legacy cost coffers since declaring bankruptcy that they will be able to compete with the world's best.

The Fusion is a nice car - Ford did a good job on it. It's not a BMW and cost tens of thousands less.

BMW's style is far from perfect.

The new 5 GT reminds of something I'd rather not remember:

I find it extra hilarious that the Ford Fusion Hybrid is $8000 more than its larger engined sister at $28k, and that they think it's going to sell in any quantity comparable to the 3rd gen Toyota Prius and the 2nd gen Honda Insight which both start at $19,xxx.

The Ford Fusion is a bad rental car even among rental cars. Simple things like the window switches, turn signals, map light, radio and other bits are omitted or ergonomically or functionally incorrect. The car is basically a 10th generation Taurus, so I'm not sure what the excuse is.

None of these cars can compare to the European diesels.

The BMW fanboism here surprises me. This level of "BMW is better than XXX" is better reserved for the likes of Bimmerpost or E46Fanatics (not that there's anything wrong with it, but Bimmerfest has always been associated with the "mature" enthusiast if you know what I mean). Just because 8 out 11 cars I've owned are BMWs, doesnt make me even remotely as fanboi-ish as some of you. I can appreciate a car for what it is, even if it doesn't wear a Roundel on the hood.

Comparing a BMW 3 series to a Ford Fusion? REALLY? Gosh, I don't see many rushing out to break out their phone cameras when their 3 series are parked next to Astin Martin Vanquishes and coming here asking which car would people pick. A $18,000 car touting 34mpg vs. a $40,000 car? Really? This is the type of elitism post I would expect from Porsche owners (no offense Emission). What next, park your 328i next to a 128i so you can bag the entry level BMW just like Porsche owners bag the boxster?

I dunno if Professor brought it up so much as a "my car is $X, yours is $Y, let's compare" sorta thing. American, Japanese, and European stylings are all different. And a big price tag doesn't make things pretty (seeing as so many people b1tch about the 7 series).

Altima Coupe, MazdaSpeed 3 (a quick one too), Acura TSX, new Camaro are all good looking cars imo, none of them are in the $40k range.

My things against (a lot) of American cars is that the designs always seem big and chunky: Caddy's have way too much sharp-angle geometry for me, 'Stangs have tumorous looking hoods, and I'm not big on superfluous amounts of chrome (yay Shadowline trim).

Regardless, I have to admit I've quite grown to love BMW-ness , so I'm probably a bit of a fanboy

Well I had a 2004 40TH Ford Mustang vert (my first car) why they are beautiful cars....nothing drives like a BMW. There is a reason why they are called "The Ultimate Driving Machine"

The HACK is kind of right. People buy cars for different reasons. I have a co-worker who has to support a family and chose a Fusion. It's given him a lot less trouble than my 335i and he probably paid < 50% what I paid. Sure, as I said above, it's not a BMW nor does it drive like one, but why compare cars that are completely in different leagues unless it makes you somehow feel better to diss cars that are blatantly lesser than yours and no one would argue that point. Why not pick on a Dodge Neon or a Hyundai Excel while you're at it?
