Considering 1999/2000 Z3 roadster

Are these reliable cars past 100k miles?considering one for my daughter.
Engine recommendation? It would be an automatic.
List of normal problems?

Thx

If they are or have been properly maintained, I believe they are. As for the engine, consider your daughters age and driving abilities and you can be the judge.

The only issue can be the cooling system, but you can just replace the proper parts adn go another 60 - 100K miles.

Other than that, they are pretty reliable.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=391945 details all the common problems, but the cooling system is the only issue thats happens to all the cars.

Although the 4 cylinder 1.9L engine (M44) gets excellent gas mileage, with only 138HP, an auto will be slow. Slow enough that merging onto a busy interstate can be risky.

There is no difference in reliability between any of the engines. I would go with any of the 6 cylinder engines.

Mine will be at 180k fairly quickly. If she ever gets to 150k, make sure you take it to the dealer and have the service done. It's crucial for your car if you want to really get it into the high miles.

THe BMWs have a service countdown indicator. When you start the car, you will see a set of bars. It starts with a number of green, yellow and red ones. When it gets down to red ones only, you need to perform service.

The service goes: Oil Service, Inspection 1, Oil Service, Inspection 2, then repeat. So every other service is an Inspection.

Inspection 1 is a good bit less than Inspection 2. But both should be done as indicated. The service interval is variable based on your driving, but for the 99/00 cars, it is about 9,000 miles. So an Inspection every 18,000.
