Umm...I guess I'm old now. (possible cat-back regrets)

The drone on this new Ultimate Racing cat-back is REALLY annoying around 2K RPM. Either it'll get better, I'll get used to it, or it will be on Ebay. I will wait to see what the wife thinks about it. I like the way it sounds outside the car or inside with the Logic 7 drowning out the drone. Dammit. It does look really beautiful, though.

Pictures? Sound files? What exhaust did you buy?

There are some YouTube videos if you search "Ultimate Racing 335i" in their search box. I read somewhere that I should give the mufflers some break-in time.

Looks nice in pictures! I never heard of a muffler needing break in but they sometimes coat the inside with something that eventually bonds to the pipes or something to that extend, so perhaps that will change the sound of it.

It's almost deafening to me; and I've been a bass player for over 20 years! Eesh, I AM an old fart! LOL

You have to give mufflers some time to get their full sound.

I'm confused. If the idea of de-badging and having a black car is to lay low and stealthy, why would you put the world's loudest muffler on it? Are highway patrolmen deaf?

Not you specifically. Trying to understand why people seem to rice just to rice since it seems they're not doing it to try to hide from the law or increase performance. In most cases, "mods" have conflicting purposes. Trying to understand the motivation.

I can't say "I told you so" because I didn't. But go back to your original post where you said you might mod, and you'll find that I sure as heck hinted that it might not be the best thing to do. "Drone" is a common and annoying side effect of many aftermarket performance exhausts. It's been mentioned many times on this and similar forums.
What you are hearing is resonance (like the backboard of your fiddle) in the musical sense of the word, except it isn't at all a pleasant note. There are acoustic fixes, the best being reinstalling the original exhaust.

No controversy intended. Was merely wondering why most mod their cars to be stealthy (black, tinted windows, no badges) and yet here's someone who wanted to add something very noisy which defeats the purpose of stealth. I read the reply where the answer basically is "that's just what makes us happy" and that's all I needed to know. That illegal behavior isn't the intent. Just bad taste in accessories.
