Question 330i Timing Belt/Chain

I have a '01 330i with 106K miles on it. Does it have a timing belt or chain and does it need to be replaced?
My car does not start and I thought the battery was down. I called AAA for a jump start but the tower told me the battery was fine but from the engine sound he could say that the timing belt needed to be replaced.
Any advice?

I believe, the 330 does not have a timing belt. Did your car making clicking noises when you tried to start it? What did you car do exactly?

When I started it, it started shaking and then the engine was reving up and then down automatically. Now it wouldn't start. It is not making clicking sound when i start it but it definitely does not sound normal

No timing belt, chain drive. Are you getting any SES lights on the dash? If so, have them read for free at Autozone and go from there.

LOL, did he recommmend that you take it to his place to get the "belt" replaced.

As pointed out, this car has a chain. The M20 engine was the last BMW 6 cylinder that had a timing belt, and the M20 was replaced by the M50 in 1991, IIRC.

My money says your battery has expired/is about to expire....bad/weak batteries cause *all sorts* of weird problems in BMWs....

Don't listen to AAA man. I can hear it now, "yea, that thar sounds like yer timin' belt is about to pop off" (think southern accent) "I'd fur sure get it fixed since this here is one of them new fangled german contraptions"

What a tool. Never ceases to amaze me how many "experts" are out there and most don't have a clue!

I am with Bob on this one, have the battery tested by a qualified person (Auto Zone, Advance, etc can do it for freee)
