I do have subscriptions to a scuba diving magazine and PMI but I subscribed to those well because I dive and I am supposed to be studying for the PMI.

They drive very conservative little Korean cars. I think BMW may be symbolic of decadence, where they come from.

On the original topic: your fears are justified.

Though the trade-off between "freedom" and safety/ convenience started a looong time ago. The irony is that people sign-up for it. No one forces them.

Now, who knows whether they actually keep a log of your location, trips, speed on public roads, recording of the calls placed through the built-in Bluetooth feature in the car etc.???

The current kids growing-up think nothing of having their entire lives on the net and that's how they communicate. They don't even use e-mail anymore, mostly IMs, their cellphone, Twitter and Facebook.

Next time you open-up the over-head section to install a hard-wired radar detector, cut the wires BMW assist needs for the car to communicate....

Yeah, but the service mileage indication tells me 900 miles to go for servicing. I didn't expect a 7:30 AM wake-up call from a much too cheery and extroverted 20 year old notifying me to the contrary.

I once made a mistake and taught science in a NYC HS. "Conversating" I found to be an unusual but effective gem heard more often than not.

Kind of scary that the young lady could tell me the exact mileage I have on the car.

In my recent visit to the dealership to replace the fuel door that mysteriously fell off on the highway, the service rep took a complete set of digital photos of my car. When I inquired about that practice, I was informed that they maintain a history of the car in their database for various reasons. Although it does not bother me at all, how's that for Big Brother?

With regard to the unwanted early morning phone calls, I've trained my six year old to answer the phone since he's up before the crack of dawn (not so funny that happens only on Saturday and Sunday but not during the week when it's a fight to get him out of bed and dressed for school). Anyway, he loves solicitors, especially ones that "talk funny". A few weeks back he had an Indian fellow trying to sell mortgage insurance on the phone for over ten minutes even after my son repeated several times that he is six years old and lives in a tent. That conversation was worth getting out of bed early to listen to!

Yes, I did sign up for it, also read the huge legal sheet disclaimer they gave me that detailed what it does and there really was nothing on "monitoring" on it. I dont think they monitor anything. The service interval things are messages sent by the car triggered by the service counter.

Actually sounds like a good idea, probably to help prevent/identify any damage done while the car is at the dealer more than anything. Good way for them to cover their asses and a good way for you to prove their guilt if something does happen while in their possession.
